Gah. This uncertainty is frustrating hahaha.

SSN doesn't come with EAD. You have to apply for it separately. Once you have EAD, you go to the SSN office and apply for the number there.

Yep, exactly what my bank told me. She can join my account with her chinese passport, added with her SSN I believe.

On the I-765 for the EAD there is an option for USCIS to arrange a SSN for you.  If you check this box it automatically follows the EAD around a week later.

Technically, the SSA can issue a SSN for non-work purposes if you qualify, https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/cards.htm:

Shows your name and Social Security number with notes, "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT."

We issue it to people from other countries who:

• are lawfully admitted to the United States without work authorization from DHS, but have a valid non-work reason for needing a Social Security number; or
• need a number because of a federal law requiring a Social Security number to get a benefit or service.

BUT in recent years it has become rare since the IRS is commonly issuing ITIN numbers for tax purposes (taxes used to be the #1 reason the SSA issued "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT" SSNs). For banking, usually big banks (BofA, Wells Fargo, Citi, etc.) can open accounts without SSN or ITIN if you go in person; also this https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/can-i-get-a-checking-account-without-a-social-security-number-en-929/. Bank of the West is also very lenient on SSN. The CA Drivers License application has an option where you can certify that you have never had a SSN. You can try getting an AB60 drivers license, but I wouldn't recommend it; @A&H2018 DOES recommend it:
