IR1 Work eligibility and SSN approval

Hi guys,

 

I've just received my IR1 with the I-551, which is valid for 6 months until I enter the US for the first time. I'm wondering about my eligibility to work. I'm not moving to the US until October.  Am I authorised to work with the IR1 immediately and can I apply for job right now?

 

Also, I don't have a SSN yet, can I apply for jobs without that also? Whats the typical wait time for a SSN once entering the US for the first time?

Yes.. as soon as you enter the US, your IR1 visa will be stamped and that becomes your temporary Green Card.. and you are allowed to work immediately. 

You can apply for a job now, but until you arrive in the US you don’t technically have work authorisation 

SSN. You don’t need one to get a job but they can’t pay you until you have one. If you requested a SSC to be issued on your DS260, it should arrive in the mail 2-3 weeks after you arrive. Or, take your passport with the stamped visa, and your birth certificate to the local SS office and apply .
