Travelling back to Philippines with different names on Greencard and Passport

Hi everyone! I apologize for the long post. I came to US through K1 visa, got married and eventually received my greencard. I am planning to go back home to Philippines for vacation and I did book my flight tickets (as it appears on my passport) without knowing there might be some sort of problems with the immigration. My big concerns are:

  1. My Passport and Green Card have different names on it.
  2. Passport still has my maiden name(no changes)
  3. Greencard is under married name but in an "american way" where they still retain my mother's maiden name as my MIDDLE NAME followed by my married name, as the state of Louisiana has made known that it has to be done the legal way and there will be a lengthy process to do the name change (petition to legally change name, court hearings, orders, decree, etc) and we don't wanna delay the process of our AOS so we did it that way. Supposing my name is MARIA(fn) GONZALES(mn) CRUZ(ln) married to BRAD PITT. My Greencard's name is MARIA GONZALES PITT which is obviously not the right regulation on name change in the Philippines when you get married. So, when I try to report my marriage and renew my passport at the same time, I was confident enough that they will allow me so the name matches my greencard but the Philippine Consulate refused because of the fact that they need to follow the "Philippine way" where you drop your mother's maiden name and use your last name as your new middle name followed by your married name. I badly needed my passport that time so I have to make a decision right there and then so I told the consulate that I will have to stick to the same name that of my old passport.

Now my question is, will I be scrutinize by the immigration upon going back to US because both my passports and greencard are under different names? Will our Marriage Certificate, Wedding Photos and copy of AOS Docs will suffice when they verify my identity? I plan to bring all of it just to be sure. I know there will be no problem landing in Philippines as Im using my Philippine passport but I know there will be issues raised at the immigration in the Philippines upon coming back to the US.

Is there someone who has the same case as mine? I really need some help as Im leaving in 2 weeks 😔 and Im really hoping to see my parents. Thank you for your help in advance!

This is simple and quite common, buy the tickets in the name on your passport, make sure you have your marriage certificate with you and when you check in for your return flight to the US, present your GC as authorization to enter the US and if the airline has questions, show them the marriage certificate.  When you enter the US, CBP most likely will not even look at your foreign passport, but if they do, also show them the marriage certificate as they see this quite often.  As to facing further scrutiny at CBP (potential secondary inspection), everyone faces that potential, but my wife traveled multiple times with this situation and was not subject to secondary inspection once, and was only asked to show the marriage certificate one time at an airline check-in back to the US in Beijing.

Hi!

I know this post was last year but wondering how your vacation went. Did you have any problems with the immigration? I have the same case and planning to visit Phils.

Hoping for your reply.

Thank you.

I have the same problem too. My passport and gc have different last name. I bought a plane ticket for this coming august and I accidentally use the last name from my gc. now my husband and I doesn't know what to do or if they will allow me to go out of country. Does anybody know what is the process of changing name on the passport? I really need to change my last name on my passport just in case they won't allow me to travel having two different family name. 🤦‍♀️ Any idea will help thank you.

If you are traveling internationally, you will not be allowed to board according to connected posters here on VJ.   You need to re-book with your passport name or get a new passport with your Green Card name.  The flight ticket and passport must match.

Your ticket and passport names must be the same.   You can go to the Philippine Consulate and get a new passport.  You will need to have Reported your Marriage to get the passport in the married name.  Contact them to make the appointments.

The airline may re-issue the ticket depending on their policies.  Contact them ASAP.   You can enter the US with a different last name green card vs passport.  Just bring the marriage certificate in case

We are the same.   ROM fro Hong Kong shows no maiden name.

Mary's married passport is the Filipino way.    Mary, 2nd Given, Maiden, Married

Mary's Green Card is Mary, 2nd Given, Married.  All of her US IDs are that way.

The airline ticket must match the passport but I buy her tickets as Mary, 2nd Given, Married to match her US ID.  No problems.  The maiden name is shown on the passport hut is not on the Machine Readable Area,

A post has been split from this thread, moved to the Philippines regional forum, and given the topic title "Can Get Phil. Passport Reissued in U.S. Name?  [split topic]."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Hi Mrs Virgo,

Everything went well leaving US they didn't check or asked any docs just the usual tickets and passport. But going back to the US you just have to show your Marriage Contract if they asked, pero I don't remember na hinanap yun. I believe GC lang hinanap and passport and good to go. 😁 Pati sa Chicago O'Hare Airport Tix, Passport and GC lang. Bring your MC na lang just in case. 😉
