Duty when arriving on CR1

Hey everyone,

I haven't found any good information on this. When my wife enters the US on her CR1 visa, will she be required to pay duty on what she brings with her? On the CBP site I see where items can be shipped duty-free for 10 years or something like that, but they don't mention anything about what you bring with you at the airport and declare on your declarations form. Anyone have experience declaring belongings when entering on CR1, and was there duty to be paid at that time? Or do they have mercy on a new immigrant?

Thanks!

My wife entered on a CR-1 visa.  She brought 4 large boxes and a few pieces of luggage.......no fees other than airline luggage fees....

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

When I entered on my K1 I declared something like “personal effects, used — $4000” on the CBP form 6059B (the little one they hand out on the planes).  Didn’t have to pay any duties nor taxes.

We showed up at a land crossing with a U-haul in tow. We had an entire household worth of effects that filled a 20 foot truck.

The only question my spouse got asked was whether his tools were for his use or somebody else.

We were not charged anything for bringing these items across.
