It's been said on this forum multiple times in multiple locations that you should, at some point, find the time to go get your SSN card fixed.

This!   If you search the VJ forum there are multiple posts regarding this, specifically stating to get it updated before the green card expires.  FYI you will need to update again when he becomes a citizen.  Our local social security office had a table set up right outside the room where the oath ceremony was done so can’t miss it.

Well we can't wait 6 hours so we have to wait till we can get time off. But seriously is this really required to do this? Yes it's a good idea but is it required?

Can your husband go by himself? You both don't need to go.

His current job has him working odd hours and it hard for him to get time off. So this is more about his work schedule than mine.

Ah, I see. Hopefully he can find time one day to make it in. It's possible he may not have to wait the full 6 hours. Could be lucky and it only be 30 minutes.

And are there going to be any reprocussions for him not updating this when he was issued GC in 2015?

I can't think of any repercussions....

None. My wife barely updated her SSA records 5 months ago with her LPR status. She has been a LPR since 2000.

When we go will they ask why we didn't update earlier? Because we didn't know and it seems other VJ members haven't done it either.

No. It's not on a mandated timeline. It is about having your records with SSA accurate. They have nothing to do with immigration and don't have any "punishment" ability if you never change. It is to your benefit to have your name and number accurate for future benefits, matching employer records who submit payments to your account, and IRS things.  My wife knew a teacher who had worked an entire career as "Nancy" but her SSA record was her birth name Ella. She had a right difficult time claiming retirement and getting  documentation to prove Nancy and Ella were the same person. Just wait until he is a citizen if you can't manage the time to go now. You are advised to wait 10 working days after getting the naturalization certificate for DHS to update the record in the SAVE database, which SSA and my DMV both use to verify. You take the certificate in,  but they still have to find you in the database.

He just got off the phone with SS office they said he can't make an appointment for this he has to go in and wait.

It is a pain for sure. We found a little rural office in a small town outside the big city. Got seen immediately on a Friday afternoon right before closing.  We were traveling that way for another purpose and popped in. Got lucky.  We had gone to our closest office once and it was such a nightmare, we turned around and walked out.

For card services we have to go to the big office which has a 6 hour wait time. That's how long we waited last time and we were there at open. If we can find the time for us to do it in the near future we will otherwise it'll be when he's a citizen. BTW his restricted card has his full first, middle and last name. Name is still accurate to the card and we've never had trouble with him getting paid or filing taxes. Just this background check thing has been the only issue but I think that may be more to do with the change they made in 2011 with socials.

Any Social Security office can help you. Waiting until citizenship  has no repercussions.

The background check you speak of is more extensive than merely verifying he is legally authorized to work by DHS. Employers are supposed to verify that as part of combatting illegal aliens. The employer can get in trouble if they hire an illegal.

The choice to make sure your husband has no criminal background or check his credit rating,  and who they choose to gather that info is something extra the employer wants to do. When the SSN doesn't go through the system, they have to manually verify which apparently takes time. Another large verifying operation LexisNexis was all over VJ at one time because their system could not verify new numbers.
