I just updated my status with SSA office with stamp in passport. She just chose i 551 option in the system and put expiry date as stamp expiry date. She also said once I get my card, i have to come back and update the expiry date again. They have to accept stamp. If you dont update your status with ssa, then during background check your green card status cant be confirmed. So go back to ssa and ask again.

I know several VJ users who never got the restriction taken off their SSN card and one of them just commented on here. GC status can be confirmed by the employer using E-verify and punching in Alien registration number. Also his last background check did come through clear it just took longer: 31 days. Are you saying it's required to update SSN card? It seems silly to have to run to the SSA office every time another obstacle in immigration clears. Our waiting time in the SSA office is 6 hours neither one of us has time to wait all day. Which is why we'd like to just do it once he's a citizen. So please can someone tell me if it's required to update SSN card?

Maybe because a SS card with restriction is meant to go with the temporary status , for people,  lawfully admitted to the US on a temporary basis who have DHS authorization to work.

Or - maybe, there are some benefits LPR is eligible but an Alien lawfully admitted (with EAD for example and  restricted SS card) - not.

As we often see some places may ask to see a copy of the SS (jobs, banks, DMV, Tax preparer and etc) and the restriction tells them that an individual is still being processed.

I don't really know for sure. Just my thoughts.

But anyway  - for whatever reason they really want to be informed when your immigration status changes.

Is there anyway to make an appointment? We don't really have time to wait 6 hours in the office like last time.

We were never told either. If it's so important they should send out a letter saying you need to go in and update file. But this link basically says it's required https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10002.pdf

What do I need beside the Green Card? Passport? valid ID?

Do I fill out any additional paperwork?

I interpreted it as SSA prefers it but it's not required: "should" ≠ "must"

But this is just my opinion

It's been said on this forum multiple times in multiple locations that you should, at some point, find the time to go get your SSN card fixed.

30 days for a background check depends on the job.  My husband's took that long but it was the US govt hiring him.  Mine took 2 days for a vet clinic.  It also costs our clinic 10 grand to hire someone with background checks and drug tests.  So maybe they hire a firm with quickness?

Quote clipped from the document:

What if my immigration status or citizenship changed?

If your immigration status changed or you became a U.S. citizen, you should tell Social Security so we can update your records. To get your immigration status or citizenship corrected, you need to show documents that prove your new status or citizenship. We can accept only certain documents as proof of citizenship for new and replacement cards. These include your U.S. passport, a Certifcate of Naturalization or a Certifcate of Citizenship. If you aren’t a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see your current immigration documents.

Is it possible to schedule an appointment to update or do we have to wait in line 6 hours?

I got issued new cards with each update of status. It was common sense to me to want the SSA to know I was a permanent resident...then a citizen.

My first SS card was issued to match my K1 arrival status as shown on the I-94.

[First Name] [Last Name]

VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION

I asked could they add my middle name. No, it must match DHS records. This was before the automated I-94 where the paper card filled out on the plane had no place for a middle name.

After getting greencard

[First Name] [Middle Initial] [Last Name]

Greencard had an initial. Social Security card (records) had to match DHS records. They mailed a new card.

After citizenship

[First Name] [Middle Name] [Last Name]

Naturalization certificate had full middle name. Social Security card (records) had to match DHS records. They mailed a new card.

The same scenario happened at the DMV. They said they had to issue a new license to match the name in  DHS records.

When we go will they ask why we didn't update earlier? Because we didn't know and it seems other VJ members haven't done it either.
