Hi everyone,

The title says it all. I am soon going to sponsor my mother to bring her to the US (as soon as I have my naturalization, I will open the petition).

The government has currently reissued the birth certificate for those who lost theirs to get/renew the new one.

My question is:

My mom's birth certificate only has year of birth which is 1970. There is no date in there, that means her password also has just year. Since birth certificate is very important in immigrant process so I just want to make sure I can correct it now as its a good time to do so.

If the government allows to add the date of birth, should I make it 1/1/1970 and update her password then? if not, will year of birth be good enough?

I need your inputs guys.

Thank you!

Your birth certificate is what they need to show she is your mother. As for your Mother's birthday certificate see if you can get the government to add day and month. Your mother will need her birth certificate for NVC stage

I think this is common in some countries, if so, the embassy should be aware of this and they won't ask for something they know that your government can't provide... But, just to be sure I would send an inquire to the consulate or NVC or the appropriate stage. Also, you could include attached to the BC an statement explaining that's how Ghana government provides the information, it can't hurt to explain a little.

You are right sorry. What I meant is that, for what I saw in another discussion, there's the same BC "issue" without month or day and they said it was common for that country and others from the same region, don't remember exactly where. I saw the description of your post thinking it was OP and got confused.

Does she/anyone know her actual date of birth? I realize that 1970 was a very chaotic time in Vietnam and a lot of records (from the war era) were lost or never properly recorded. She needs to have an actual date (day-month-year) and get it on her birth certificate and passport. The U.S. is pretty tough on sketchy records, especially from a high-fraud country like Vietnam. She can go to the officials in the province of her registration and get it done.  If you need help, let me know - my VN sister-in-law works for the government in this capacity.
