Just fishing for some ideas folks... Walls are REALLY old in our new apt, and I've hung the pics that I can with the velcro style fasteners (I think there's heavy duty oil paint on the walls).. but I have Paintings and heavier pieces that I don't want to take the chance on.

I found this tip below that seems to be pretty common.. Anyone have any others?

When preparing to hang pictures on plaster walls, mark the spot carefully and place a piece of Scotch tape where you'll drive the nail. This will keep the plaster from crumbling.

drywall or plaster?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

This is good advice depending on how thick the plaster is. My walls are actually cement, like backer board. I must use a drill, a concrete bit and molly screws to put anything up.

Have a happy house decorating time!

Actually, the scotch tape does help, as does pounding the nail straght in and not on an angle.

My life has been blessed with the love of 4 of the sweetest men in the world. James, Jonathan, Nicolas, and Islam, my sons and my S/O.

Thanks for this, I would never have thought of the straight nail bit! I know we have to talk to the Landlord as well.. *sigh..

This place is delightful.. but I've never had plaster walls before.. so.. it's a challenge for me.. I'm ready to get my art off the floors though!!

Plaster.. The house is a VERY old (But very beautiful) Victorian Home.

Plaster walls can be great...they have a lot of character and they're very solid if well-done. No wall in our house is made of 100% plaster; the plaster is put over exposed brick or stud walls with paneling. I'm not sure you could make a wall with plaster...it has the consistency of jello pudding. Even if your plaster is in bad shape I don't think you'd have to worry about your house falling down, though.

If your plaster is in good condition then it can take light items, but speaking from personal experience our plaster would not hold the weight of a painting or a large mirror on 1-2 nails. If we drill deep enough then we can put rawl plugs into the brick, but it makes a large and unattractive hole that has to be spackled if you ever take the item down. We hung some shelves on the wall that way and they look great, and they hold a lot of weight. I wouldn't just tap a nail into the wall and hang something; if you go to a hardware store and tell them what it is you want to do and what kind of walls you have they should be able to recommend proper fasteners/rawl plugs.

Are the walls "Crest-blue" or "Colgate-white"?

If so, then just hang the picture with nails/screws and fill in the holes later.

(these shades have been used in college/university dorms for donkeys-years).

If you could find a stud behind the plaster, I'd nail through the tape right into the stud, otherwise I'd go to the hardware store like Homesick suggested.

We had plaster walls but we never hung anything very heavy.
