Travel with expired green card while awaiting AOS

My Wife's green card (EAD) expires on 12/15/18.  I filed for the Lifting of Conditions to get a 10 year green card (EAD) Nov. 17 and of course we are still waiting.  We want to go visit her family in Peru during Christmas but would not return til 12/29-after the current green card (EAD) expires.  I don't expect we will have her new 10 year green card (EAD) before end of year.  What do we need to do for her to travel?

Um.. what form did you file? If you filed AOS forms then boy, it's completely wrong. 😛

 

You should have extension letter also.. but if you filed AOS not ROC then I guess you wouldn't get it.

We had the 2 year green card and then got a 1 year extension letter which is what she used in June this year to return form a visit to peru.  Right now we are waiting on the Form I-751 lifting of conditions.

The Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is not a green card. She should have a I-551 (the physical green card) upon her AOS being approved.

 

When you filed for Removal of Conditions (ROC), you should have received an extension letter extending the validity period of the green card by 12 months. They are sending new letters that extend it by 18 months, but I'm unaware of people who have already filed actually getting those letters yet.

 

You can make an Infopass appointment to request an I-551 stamp in the passport to act as a green card valid for 1 year.

That said, some offices are hesitant to issue those until a few weeks before the expiration of the current green card.

You edited your first post and honestly it's even more confusing. 

EAD is not a green card..

So apologies for my lack of specificity and accurateness.  Yes, she has the I-551 green card.  And yes she has the extension letter from when we filed for ROC which get us to 12/15/18.  So it sounds like based on what you said....we need a I-551 stamp in the passport if we don't have her new green card before we are ready to travel.  THANKS!!

Greencard (EAD) expires 12/15/18. Greencard and EAD are two different things

Correct. Schedule an appointment well before you plan to travel as they may be difficult to obtain on a short notice, and be sure to bring evidence of your plans to travel abroad (since they tend to be reluctant to issue one until the current green card is about to expire).

What Geowrian said. Go with printed copies of your tickets/paid-for itinerary. Don't just go and tell them you plan to travel, it won't work.

 

It is a two-edged sword, though. You could buy the tickets, and they decline to issue the I-551 stamp until the extension letter is expired or just about to expire -- which would mess up your travel plans.

 

Otherwise, you could make travel plans that begin and conclude before the extension letter expires.
