Hi guys., Were planning to go to Cancun Mexico in December., I only have the extension letter., is it safe to travel and come back? Thanks

I wish you would take a look around because then you would see that this is often asked question. Yes, you can go and visit abroad while on the extension letter. Just make sure you book the tickets in your passport name and not the name of your green card.

But specifically, will Mexico accept the extension letter for entrance into the country? We fly to Mexico this Tuesday and I am scared to death to be turned away once we get into Mexico.

It looks like a visa is required for Mexico for someone with a Tunisian passport.

Tunisia. I have the expired GC with extension letter that was received in June 2018.

  • With the purpose of facilitating and promoting travel to Mexico, effective May 2016 all those foreign nationals, regardless of their nationality, visiting Mexico for tourism, business or transit are NOT required to obtain a Mexican visa IF they hold a valid (non-expired) Visa or Permanent Residence of any of this countries: United States of America, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom or Schengen area (European Union).

US Residents: If your United States visa stamped on your passport already expired but you have an official document proving your legal status in USA, you must apply for a Mexican visa (I-797 A Forms, Advance Parole Forms, I-20 OR DS-2019 Forms won’t be accepted to entering Mexico), unless you have a valid Visa for any of the countries listed above (Canada, Japan, United Kingdom or Schengen area).

But I am a valid Permanent Resident of the US. The extension letter proves so.

Did you see what else I posted?

Kind of the fine print, but very important.  I had heard there are other countries that allow visa free travel to US GC holders, but if the LPR status is proven by other documents (ROC NOA, etc.), then a visa is required.

Original, not a copy, extension letter and expired green card is all you need to re-enter the US.

Agree, bring the original, but it is also a good idea to bring a few copies.  My wife was traveling through China once with the extension letter and the airline wanted to keep it, luckily they accepted a copy of the letter for their records.
