Tennessee executes child killer Billy Ray Irick with drug that inflicts 'torturous pain'
More

Tennessee has carried out its first execution in nearly a decade using a controversial cocktail of drugs including a lethal ingredient described by the Supreme Court as "chemically burning at the stake".

Billy Ray Irick, an inmate convicted of the 1985 rape and murder of seven-year-old Paula Dyer, received a three-drug injection on Thursday night after the US Supreme Court denied a final request to stay his execution.

Wonder how the state prevailed amidst all the do-gooder wails about inhumane punishment?

I wondered that myself.  And if you read the account closely, it alludes to the man suffering... but when you get to the part where they administered the first drug, which relaxes him, then the second drug paralyzes him, then the salt stops his heart... well, it got me thinking.  So I looked up the process from before.  And whaddya know?  Same thing that has been done for many many years.

Midazolam = Versed, a very common general anesthesia.  Used it several times myself, very effective and fast-acting.

Vecuronium bromide = Norcuron, also commonly used in surgical applications to relax the muscles, ease intubation, and to keep a patient from moving during surgery.

Potassium Chloride is used to stop the heart, and has been the final drug of the cocktail for years.

I’m not saying the killer felt nothing, but I seriously doubt he did.  I know when I have been given the first two drugs before, I felt nor remembered anything when I woke up.  Bunch of hoopla over nothing, if you ask me.

The “old” lethal injection cocktail can be found here:  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethal_injection

In this case any suffering is warranted, I doubt he was concerned with the child's pain and well being

From a personal standpoint I agree. However from a legal standpoint everyone is supposed to be protected from cruel and unusual punishment. Not sure if the lethal injection is actually cruel and unusual. That is why I suggested a firing squad because there is no question there.

I believe some crimes supercede the legal recourse, this is one, I would prefer he was altered to appear female and released into the general population for a long period of time

If I caught someone doing this, they would wish that law enforcement got to them first. However once they are in the hands of the law, constitutional rights have to apply. I mentioned the slippery slope the last time someone brought up using cruel and unusual punishment. I believe there is a good reason our founding fathers included that clause.

We may personally believe that someone deserves to suffer, but we probably shouldn't want the legal system to be the entity that has discretion in inflicting that suffering.

I think that we all understand due process can be frustrating,  but it protects not just the crimnal st times,  but all our citizens from unjust tryanny.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were a recent addition to the #walkaway movement.  You’re really getting to be likeable!

(Actually, I jest.  I think most on here, even with opposing views, would be easy to get along with IRL over a brew and some good discussion.  But it’s harder to understand one’s meaning & leaning via the written word.)
