My family escaped socialism and came to America.

People in America are too privileged and have never tasted the true socialism, an illusion about a society where no one is poor, they then take away people's money and every single person is poor.

Well... nobody runs around claiming the poor are getting poorer.....so they have that.

Does anyone believe that the Democratic Socialists will run independently as a party in the future?

I saw the Cornel West interview on Tucker Carlson's show and wasn't really impressed with him at all. According to West there are different kinds of socialism and the right one just hasn't been tried. If socialists themselves can't agree on a format how can they hope to succeed.

Surely the main Democratic party will get tired of this socialist bull before the next election. I can't really see how winning in 2020 on a promise of socialism is what democrats want.

Actually, this might be the Democratic party these days.  Listen to their spokespeople.

Can they back off from this, though, or is it too late?

They're counting on enough voters who believe the incessant attacks on Pres. Trump.

If they indeed flip the House & Senate, look out.

During good times, it's surprisingly easy to forget about the bad times.

We'll see how many voters forget (to their peril) about how it was when Pelosi and Schumer were in the majority.

It's lucky if they even give bread to you:blink:

You probably know about Vietnam War and Fall of Saigon. Basically the North (communist) won against the South in 1975. Except who had higher position in the South's gov escaping, others were stuck but they only wanted a place to sleep, eat and work at the end. The communist gov promised about a society where no one would be poor, they took away people's land/property, businesses in the South collapsed, the poor was still poor, the middle and upper class became poor also. Money was in communists' pocket. All people at that point experienced not just "poor", but starving. That's why in the period of 1978-1980s, the term "boat people" became popular, millions escaped the country and rather died at sea than living in that world.

I don't know what's in people's mind to support such a cruel society. Even the poor in America are too privileged.

And I'm not a Democrat or Republican, since there are some ideals from majority of people in each party I don't agree with.

But supporting socialism is the stupidest thing ever. If Democrats keep saying "socialism", sooner or later, young college people will understand its harm and turn away. Lots of LGBTs (mostly gay men I talk to) around me already turn away from Democrats, their targeted demographic...

Your words are words of wisdom.  Unfortunately, those who advocate for socialism seem ignorant to history.  Ocasio-Cortez should crash and burn with her ideas (hopefully sooner rather than later).

I was in Trinidad today and watched a lady from Venezuela try to make her way thru Customs... nope! The officers grabbed her, separating her and her (presumably boyfriend) man, and escorted her out to be put back across the border.  The people in Trinidad are not at all supportive of the illegals coming across from Venezuela, trying to steal their jobs.

Like you, I don't really claim either political party.  There is good and (really) bad on both sides.  But anyone on either side who advocates for socialism is either seriously uneducated or just plain selfish, in my opinion.
