I recently received a letter in the mail saying I needed to file a tax return for my wife and stepdaughter (age 5)  in order to continue the process for them to get a green card. It says I need to provide a copy of the tax return or proof to show why I don't need to file one. My wife has a social security number but my stepdaughter does not. I would greatly appreciate any guidance as to how to move forward.

I think you misunderstood.  Only the petitioner is required to have filed taxes.

I will double check the letter after work, but I am pretty confident it said that they needed to file a tax return. I got two separate letters, one for each of them. I also filed my tax return early in the tax season so it should have been on file and I don't think they should have sent me those letters if it was just mine

Did you send evidence that you filed a tax return?  YOU MUST PROVIDE THE EVIDENCE..They don't pull the information from the IRS.......as I said, only the petitioner must provide evidence of filed taxes, not the beneficiaries.

You were right. My wife just sent me a photo of the notice and it did say the petitioner. Thanks for helping me get it cleared up. I will be mailing the evidence this week.

Great!!  At least that is an easy RFE to answer....good luck to you and your family.
