It all depends really on your situation.  How much savings you have, how much risk you are willing to accept.  Most advice is to wait for visa in hand and it's wise advice.   We booked my husband's flight so close to his interview that if anything went wrong we had a problem.  Turns out we did in fact have a problem after he had been approved but before he got on the plane.

You don't know if you are REALLY ok until it's in his hands.

They give you 4-6 weeks notice for your interview, so that would be a more prudent time to quit.

This is very helpful. Perhaps that would be the best time for him to give notice.

So we will get a letter (email?) alerting us to schedule our interview 4-6 weeks in advance? Can anyone provide further information on this, particularly for the UK?

Unless you as a couple are so wealthy that losing a few months of salary is of no real consequence to you, quitting his job before the visa is in hand, would be very costly.  If those two months are that important, it would make more sense to use two of the six months between visa issue and visa expiration for those activities.

Otherwise, once you have submitted everything to NVC, THAT is when you'll be a couple months away from an interview.

No, you will get an email telling you the date and time of which NVC has scheduled your interview.  You do not schedule your interview.

Agreed! That is exactly what my husband and I did. When he received the K1 and got his passport back, we booked tickets to fly to Europe and backpacked for a couple months together before coming to the US. We planned our traditional-type wedding from abroad and we had a big wedding once we flew in just shortly before the K1 would expire.

Fine but in a K1 case the immigrant is not authorized to work in the US for several months anyway.  Apples and oranges.

Sure, if you are confident that everything will go as you plan.  What happens if it doesn't?  You okay if this drags on longer than expected?

Those of us with have years of experience are advising you to wait until a visa is in hand.   The US Embassy explicitly advises not to quit a job without a visa in hand.  Not a single person has advised you to do anything else.

Your life, your choice.  Best of luck.

We received our NOA 1 in late July and are eagerly awaiting NOA 2, although we appreciate that we won’t likely hear until after Christmas.

I am eager for my husband to move to the States as soon as his visa is issued. He, however, wants to make sure that he gives a month of notice and travels a bit with his father before relocating. Ideally, he’d like about two months total. Should he give notice when we received NOA 2?

Is there any notification that is roughly two months away from the medical/interview? I suppose I am a bit confused about what goes on at NVC and how long we can expect it to take. It seems that some individuals emigrating from the UK start scheduling their medical and such as soon as their file arrives at NVC. We will definitely have all the paperwork (vaccines, police record, etc.) ready in advance, so I don’t expect any delays there. But are there other delays we should consider?

Thank you in advance for any insight!

NOA 2 is just a notice of action, a mere notice, not yet an approval.

We did a K1 visa. I advise for him not to give his notice until he has the visa in hand.

My husband waited until he had the visa in hand, worked a month, sorted out all of his council tax, bills, etc and then came to America. Waiting an extra month or two doesn't really hurt. :)

Same.

My husband didn't quit his job until a week before he flew down here to move. It seemed smarter to work as long as possible.

When we say NOA2, we mean a notice of "approval" as the "action type".  It's true that the second notice is not always an approval notice.  When that happens we call it an RFE.  You can get any number of "notice of action" forms between NOA1 (receipt) and NOA2 (Approval).  Armed with that understanding, one can dispense with the unnecessary semantics. 😉

Just to clarify. Even if we had gone the spousal visa route, he most likely would have done the exact same thing. Work until a week before his plane flew out here. He enjoys a paycheck, even if he had a job lined up, I could see him work at where ever he was at until he literally couldn't any more.

I say it depends on your finances.

You can check our timeline below in my signature, although it was 3 years ago.  We had an issue with the NVC not being able to understand that for my husband's divorce decree from the UK, they don't have a physical signature from a judge, so after asking for a supervisor review to be told the same thing, we had to comply with their RFE (sending the same document just simply highlighting 2 words on it), and then waiting another 45 days to review and approve and then send to the embassy, our process was extended an extra 3 months.

We were on the phone with the NVC almost every other day after we got the approval that they had sent it to the embassy and they were able to tell us the interview date before we even got the email notification.

Even then, we waited until he had the visa in hand before he gave his notice because we didn't want to run the risk that anything happened with AP being extended or something else coming up.

Trust me, you feel like it's a rush rush rush to get it all done, but he'll have plenty of time to get everything done once he has the visa and then you'll have the rest of your lives together.  A few more weeks is nothing in the bigger picture.  :)

Good luck!
