Should my husband resign from his job after NOA2?

We received our NOA 1 in late July and are eagerly awaiting NOA 2, although we appreciate that we won’t likely hear until after Christmas.

I am eager for my husband to move to the States as soon as his visa is issued. He, however, wants to make sure that he gives a month of notice and travels a bit with his father before relocating. Ideally, he’d like about two months total. Should he give notice when we received NOA 2?

Is there any notification that is roughly two months away from the medical/interview? I suppose I am a bit confused about what goes on at NVC and how long we can expect it to take. It seems that some individuals emigrating from the UK start scheduling their medical and such as soon as their file arrives at NVC. We will definitely have all the paperwork (vaccines, police record, etc.) ready in advance, so I don’t expect any delays there. But are there other delays we should consider?

Thank you in advance for any insight!

So... Every case is different (which you don’t need me to tell you) 🙂

However, I may be able to offer a little insight considering I recently went through the K1 process in the U.K.

This is how it worked out for ME -

NOA2 came 7 months after NOA1.

I received NOA2 September 9th 2017, NVC had my case 9 days later, I scheduled my embassy interview for early/mid October, I then booked my medical test for late September.

My Husband and I actually planned a last minute vacation to London/France/Switzerland so I re-scheduled my interview for when he was in town (December). However, if I hadn’t re-scheduled I think I could have been in The States within 4-6 weeks.

(I re-scheduled because I was worried I wouldn’t get my passport back in time for our planned vacation as the embassy take it away after your interview)

Anyway, once I had my interview I recieved my passport back 8 days later.

London moves pretty quickly and you should be able to get an interview date scheduled within 2-4 weeks. Some embassy’s have you waiting a long time to get an interview!

Dont forget to ask your GP for a copy of your “summary of health” for your medical!

Once NOA2 comes around it all moves pretty quickly!!

Good Luck!!

i would  not to till he gets visa in his passport stamped he will have 6 months to travel after which he can quit and sort out everything he need specially that the stamp of visa can be delayed after a successful interview if entered administrative process can take month which i hope not to happen for you or anyone, to stay in safe side he can after he receive his passport that what i would do.

My wife petitioned for me last November, and I handed in the 4 weeks notice for my job on on June 29th. I finished working on July 20th.

I chose to quit then for a number of reasons:

- I was really, really fed up with my job - and had been for months

- I figured that my NOA2 would be imminent (and it was, we got it in the post on July 5th)

- I wanted 3-4 weeks of quality family time in the UK

- I wanted to finally get round doing my driving lessons/test here in the UK

- I wanted to squeeze in a short trip to the US, and start moving stuff over

- I also wanted to spend 3-4 weeks with family in China (which I haven't done yet)

I'm fortunate in that I have enough savings and things planned to do to see me through a few months without feeling like I'm just bumming around.

If you're in the same situation re: money and plans then I'd say go for it, otherwise I wouldn't quit quite yet. If you don't have travel plans or anything like that perhaps wait until you've started the NVC process, it took a whole another month for NVC just to receive our case from Texas.

After you get your NOA2 it can take a week (or two or more) for the case to even be sent to NVC. Once it arrives at NVC it can take another week (or two or more) to be scanned/received. You then need an NVC case number which is currently taking 3-9 weeks from what I'm seeing around this forum.  (So 6-13 weeks from NOA2 to case number)

The process from there is depending on how fast you pay fees/do paperwork/what your consulate is/how quickly they can arrange an interview etc. I'm sure other users who've gone though your embassy can give you a better indication there.

It's all a very personal decision, I've taken some risks of doing things too early (i.e I've already sold my house) so that I have nothing stopping me being reunited with my wife as soon as possible.

12/26/17 - NOA1

06/27/18 - NOA2 (+183 days)

07/11/18 - Case sent to NVC (+14 days)

07/18/18 - NVC Received (+7 days)

08/10/18 - NVC Case Number (+23 days)

09/06/18 - All Docs Submitted (+27 days)

09/19/18 - Case Complete at NVC (+13 days)

10/18/18 -  Interview appointment letter received (+29 days)

11/20/18 - Interview Date (+33 days) - APPROVED!

11/26/18 - Visa Received

We did a K1 visa. I advise for him not to give his notice until he has the visa in hand.

My husband waited until he had the visa in hand, worked a month, sorted out all of his council tax, bills, etc and then came to America. Waiting an extra month or two doesn't really hurt. :)

I know you’re anxious for him to be here. Does he feel he should quit his job when NOA2 is received?  You two have a lifetime to share together in the future. He only has a couple of months to finish his life there. Let him be the guide in this part of the journey. Best wishes to the two of you.

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. This is such a great community!

Perhaps we will wait until we have the NVC number and can book his medical, so we can have a better idea of the timeline before he resigns. Then he can either do his last month of work, hopefully get the visa, and travel for a month or so OR do his last month of work, travel for a month, and then get his visa. Anyway, plenty of time to consider these options before we hear on NOA 2.

I received my NOA2 in February, got my case number in May, and I am now waiting for my interview appointment letter.  It would be a big risk for him to quit after getting his petition approved. They give you 4-6 weeks notice for your interview, so that would be a more prudent time to quit.

Hopefully his job already knows that he will be leaving, even if they don't have a specific date yet. When paul got a new job in february, he was upfront that he would be here about a year and that he was in the immigration process.  we hadn't filed yet, but knew it was coming soon. They are fully aware the minute he can leave ... he is.

as someone else said, he has 6 months to move after visa issuance. thats more than enough time to give notice and do whatever family stuff he wants to do before he comes.  its all a matter of how soon he WANTs to move/ make that change.

You may till be 3 to 4 months from the visa when you get the NVC number. You can’t do the medical until the consulate has his file.. I encourage you to accept the slow down and not rush.. months of lost income and waiting without other things to do really wear down a person... and you also can’t count on having the visa until it is correctly attached to your passport and back in your hands

Hey @Lsthorpe1 what is the summary of health? I thought you just needed you vaccinations for your medical?

You also need a “summary of health”

(as far as I’m aware! Someone correct me if I’m wrong!)

I needed it anyway!

It’s basically a print out from your Dr stating any underlying illness’s, previous illnesses, vaccination record etc.

You need even if it comes back blank 🙂

Like I said - correct me if I’m wrong! But I went through the London embassy late 2017 and it was requested at my medical!
