Hi friends, my husband and I are getting ready to begin the necessary steps in filing for a CR-1 Visa on his behalf. I am wondering a few things. First, is it absolutely necessary to hire an immigration lawyer? We are expecting in the next 6 weeks and would like to save as much as we can, I am very organized so is it absolutely necessary to hire one?

Also just wondering if anyone knows where I can go about getting his documents translated from Spanish to English?

Lastly, any advice in general would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

If your case is not complicated, you can file without an attorney.  Many posters here file on their own.  This is the VJ guide for CR-1 visas:

If you study the guide, read VJ, and ask questions here, you will save a lot of money vs hiring an attorney....good luck...

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Majority of VJ members did not hire an immigration attorney and were approved. Just follow the VJ guide for CR 1 visas and we all here to help if you have any questions. Best of luck and congratulations on your bundle of joy.

Unless you have a complicated case, I would recommend filing yourself. I would also try to get your petition in ASAP because life tends to get crazy and harder to manage once a baby comes. Study the guide above and you'll be great :) Congratulations!

We hired an attorney because my husband was on deployment and i didn't have any clue on how to get started but i also didn't know of VJ.

Regarding translations i've used Babble On translations, everything's done online and found them efficient and super quick on translating my Italian and Spanish documents.

Hiring an immigration attorney is all up to you. If you feel confident you can do it all on your own then go ahead.

For me it has been stressful even with an attorney but it has surely helped heaps on this long (and yet not terminated) process.

Good luck on your journey :)!

I'm addition to what @missileman has said, don't be in a rush to file. Be an A student before going ahead to start up this process.

Goodluck to you  both on this long journey
