Is there a limit as to how long before the interview the medical exam must be done?

The visa itself will only be valid for 6 months from the medical, so the interview would need to be within that timeframe (plus time for AP and such).

My visa is valid from the second day of my interview, 27th July 2018... I don't think that's true here in South Africa. I stand corrected though but that's my own situation.

I have heard some places have done it differently.

The visa is valid for a maximum of 6 months from issuance. At the same time, the visa's validity period is limited by the medical exam. The FAM states the medical is only valid for up to 6 months (and less in certain circumstances), although how different consulates address it can differ.

tldr: Always go by the date on the visa. If SA regularly goes by 6 months from the date of issue, then so be it (idk if it is or isn't the case). In general, it's 6 months from the date of medical.
