I have bought a few items on EBAY, as a buyer I would get email from folks trying to scam the seller and potential buyer.

I was interested into this car, It's local so I could take a drive and see it, I got an email from the so CALLED seller saying he's out of town, and If interested to foward the deposit and his wife will drive to my town with the car. It was suspicious when I noticed it's a UK london address and also EBAY ALWAYS WARN peopl not to send money out of their network or through Western Union like th Thief was trying to do. Good thing, the seller had his phone number listed when I called up directly, he told me He took the car off Ebay since he didn't get the asking price. HE HAD NO CLUE people were contacting those folks who were interested in the car.

Now I have a couple of Item I want to sell on Ebay, I can see the same pattern of those hustler trying to ROB people, peopl have no shame nowadays, anything for a buck. Just venting out on this madness, To folks here who are ebay sellers, Please give your feedback.

First - you should report scams like this to Ebay - you can do so at the bottom of the auction page.

Second - most people (buyers and sellers) on Ebay are honest -BUT you should take precautions. Open a PayPal account - (not possible for all countries, but very popular in the US) - accept PayPal only (is what I do).

If you're selling - reject anyone who wants to buy it outright without participating in the Auction - SCAM.. otherwise - things should be OK since you hold the goods.

Some new buyers can be slow to pay or think it's OK not to pay, but if you report failure to pays to Ebay, you can get your auction fee credited back so you're at least not out the money.

Hope that at least helps a bit.. It's a great way to make some extra cash...

My sister and I sell on eBay. She handles all of the listing and taking money part. Her preferred method of collecting payments is through a money order. Its a little slower, but it eliminates the Paypal service charge, and fees seem to keep going up. We've noticed that close to 5% of the people winning our auctions fail to ever pay for it. Of course we don't ship until payment is received.

One of the thing I like about eBay is that its still considered a hobby, so none of my income from eBay is subject to self-employment taxes. That probably saved me about $2000 on my 2006 taxes.

These scams ahve been going on for years, nothing new.

Just treat Ebay as you would ANY tbuying and selling, would you give a stranger $100 and tell him to go get the TV he promised he had for sale and meet you back the next day??

No, you wouldn't!!

So why would you even consider it on Ebay???

For buyers, PayPal is the safest way, for sellers, postal orders or direct bank transfer is best.

I have had few problems buying or selling on Ebay... The only two problems I had selling on Ebay were mostly because I was selling on Ebay for my work, and was accepting straight credit card payments (without PayPal), and the office at my work was slow in processing one (and then didn't tell us when it wouldnt go through), and the other one, where the lady paid with a credit card, it was accepted, and then a couple weeks AFTER she got the item (a $2000 camera.) she denied the charges on her credit card... I fought it best I could, and still dont know the outcome, since I no longer work for that company.. Otherwise I have had no problems... The only problem i had in buying was once where the seller didn't send my items for a month after the auction, and I had to go to paypal to get my money back.. but paypal came through and I was refunded all of my money... (yay), and was able to get the items elsewhere.. Otherwise, I have had no real problems to speak of...

I have sold and bought many things on ebay. I haven't had any problems yet. When I sell, I only accept paypal payments now. Once I accepted payment by check, but it took forever to get the check from the person, so I started sticking to paypal only. But as Gary asid above, I guess if you are selling lots and lots of stuff, the paypal fees can get old fast. But if you are just selling a few things, I'd still go with paypal.

Do searches on ebay for what you want to sell, to see if they are selling anywhere there and for about how much.

I just bought the movie Happy Feet off Ebay, it was a big mistake. The seller stated in their auction that they were in the US, but when the Dvd came it was shipped from Hong Kong. It was also in a sleeve, not a box, which they did not state in the auction. And to top it all there are words at the bottom of the screen that don't match the words the characters are saying. There are even some foreign words coming up that they obviously haven't managed to translate into English. I have reported the seller to Ebay and Paypal, and I'm now awaiting a refund. My advice is always check out the sellers feedback, and also check other websites because sometimes you can get the same thing, only much cheaper. I do like Ebay, but you have to be careful.

i had a similar episode on amazon - the dealer would not respond to emails (responded to one out of 4) and the response on the one they did reply to had a bad phone number on it. the information they sent in the original purchase email showed the post office was notified of the impending shipping on one day but it was not actually sent until 9 days later. to top it all off, the seller sent me an email telling me that amazon dropped them - and i found it rather amusing as i gave the 2 stars which probably led to them being dropped
