Hey VJers!

For those who have done DCF in China (Guangzhou consulate -- though I'll be starting through the Beijing Embassy), what did you do to prove intent to re-establish domicile? Were they very strict? I've read some horror stories on VJ but from other countries (Montreal, Canada to be precise).

Any words of wisdom? Thank you!

We went through the GZ consulate. Had a huge file to show domicile. They never asked about it even though my husband was living in China for 13 years. He just moved back a few weeks before my interview. Officer asked where my husband was currently to which I said “USA”.

We had had the following in case asked:

- Moving contract with shippers

-  Signup with real estate web company looking for apartment

- Letter from his mother saying we would live with her on xxx and would be looking for a permanent home.

- Drivers License (he always renewed even though living in China)

- Credit Card & Bank account showing USA addressed (he used his Mom address)

- Copy of flight reservation to USA

Good luck!

Thanks for your response! I have all of these. If absolutely necessary, I could travel back to the USA before my wife, but I would rather not do that, especially because I'm on a teaching contract that will expire precisely when I would like to go back to the US and I would like to accompany her to the interview and move together back to the States.

You’ll be fine then. Personally I don’t think you need to travel back. I would bring your teaching contract showing it’s expiring as further evidence that you’re planning on returning.

I also have transcripts I can use to show that I've been doing school online for the entire time I've been in China to prove my intent to finish my education on campus.

If the interview date is close enough, I should be able to register for classes and get the registrar to write a formal letter showing that I am registered for on-campus classes the semester that begins shortly after we plan to enter the US.

Here's a cover letter I'm working on:

Quote

Dear Sir or Madam,

The following is intended to establish my intent to re-establish domicile in the United States upon entry with my wife, XXX.

1.    I have maintained a permanent mailing address at: XXX

a.    See attached photocopy of official mail sent to said address

2.    I have continuously worked on a graduate degree (a XXX at XXX in XXX) for the entirety of my stay in China, always with the intent of returning to the United States to finish the degree. I intend to return to the United States to complete my degree in July 2019

a.    See attached unofficial transcripts showing classes taken every semester while being in China

3.    I have arranged temporary living arrangements before moving to XXX to finish my graduate degree

a.    See attached letter of accommodation

4.    I have maintained a phone number in the United States, namely, XXX

5.    I have visited the United States in XXX for X days and in XXX for X days

6.    For nearly three years of my time in China, I was employed by an American company

a.    See attached employment history section of I-130

7.    I have maintained my United States bank account with XXX, conducting regular transactions and building up a savings

a.    See attached printed transaction history

8.    I have maintained my United States brokerage account, infrequently buying and selling equities on the United States stock market

a.    See attached printed records of holdings and transaction history

9.    I have maintained my United States credit card, regularly buying United States goods on my account

a.    See attached printed transaction history

10.  I have continuously paid my federal income taxes

a.    See attached IRS income tax transcripts

11.  I have maintained and renewed my United States Passport from within the United States
