I don't think the country as a whole is becoming a police state, but there are places in the US that choose/chose to test our limits.

New York and my home city Baltimore , a couple of good examples.

True that, but they are not controlled by Trump or the Right. I have seen this a number of times from people abroad that they are think the US is becoming some defacto dictatorship or military police state because of Trump.

This has been going on way before Trump.

I can understand why the rest of the world thinks this though. Various police departments across the country love to buy surplus military equipment.

But most of the police state comes from drug infested areas... Where they don't know how to fix the root of the problem, so they throw cops at it hoping to arrest their way out of it.

I think New york had stop and frisk ?   Big no no in my book

Yeah, New York had stop and frisk.

It "worked" but it also violated way to many law abiding citizens.

Also cops did not enforce it evenly amongst races which lead to more racial profiling problems.

Just like any other type of racial profiling, officer sees a foreigner and makes an assumption without just cause.

Considering "foreigners" are the only people who could have issues with their legal status, I don't see how it's not probable cause.

I'm not saying stop every hispanic looking guy ever, but making a daily trip around the hardware stores in southern CA could get you quite a few bad hombres.

Foreigner is a broad term, that I used on purpose.

And in the US we call that racial profiling.

Too bad, it seems like an effective strategy.

It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Stop and frisk would be your best example of this. The outcomes were not good.

Aren't there many foreigners of many races?  Btw, I thought the police had to have probable cause to stop anyone?  Sure the PC can be thin, but still, there has to be a reason for the stop before checking anyone's status.  Still not racial profiling though since someone could be from anywhere and be here illegally.

Foreigner is both a broad and relative term. That's why I used it.

And yes, but ironclad is litterally talking about picking up people on the side of the street because they look and/or sound different.

I typically lean right, however I agree with Keith & Arileidi on this, here it seems foreigner means anyone not white and with an appropriate regional accent

My Son-In-Law is black, lives in a very white neighborhood, when traveling alone he has been stopped several times driving his late model car within the law on his own street by the police to determine his reasons for being there

My neighbors had a hard time accepting my wife who is Asian, we still get double-takes based on ager gap and mixed race

I have been questioned when traveling with my mixed race grandchildren on what I was doing with them, were they mine, who's children were they

We have to many natural flavors to visually determine country of residence, in the absence of suspicious behavior there should be no stop and search or there should be universal stop and search

Still that would not be racial profiling as many people that sound different look a lot like people that are USCs.  This is not to say it would be right to stop anyone just to determine their status, but I really do not see why it is an issue if a person is stopped or arrested for something else.

My wife is white, but definitely does not have an appropriate regional accent.  In fact, based on all the left wing hype regarding Russian collusion and Russians got Trump elected, I tend to worry about her interactions with others.  So far nothing.  I am not condoning anyone being stopped just to check status, I am only trying to point out that status and race, as some have suggested, do not go hand-in-hand.
