Health Insurance - ITIN/SS #?

As a new hire, I am trying to elect my health insurance choices, but I was told that in order to add my spouse, he has to have a social security number. Since we are right in the middle of the AoS waiting period, I don't think we'll receive the number before the election deadline. The health insurance benefits people told me over the phone that my spouse can use an ITIN number, but when I checked that website, it says it's only for people who are not eligible for a social security number and all others should apply for a SS. Haha. Round and round it goes.

 

Can someone explain this quagmire to me? Can my spouse still get a social security number if we go to an office? He's been in the states since April and we already applied for the number on the AoS paperwork in May. Can he get an ITIN number? How difficult/time consuming is that? If you have any advice or can shine a light on this for me, I would be very appreciative.

Go over the person's head who claims that your spouse cannot be put on your insurance without an SSN. It's simply not true.

SSNs are not required to add a spouse to insurance.  Talk to HR and/or the insurance rep.  SSNs are preferred, but not required.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

That seems about right. What you needed to do was apply for SSN right after he arrived. Some companies won’t budge on the SSN. You’re gonna have to wait for aos to be completed most likely. You may need to get private insurance which will cost you a lot and even then they may request ssn.

TNj17 is correct.  Depends on the policy for that company

 

An ITIN is a waste of time.  I was able to get a SS# for my K1 spouse but could not get SS for k2.  I applied for the ITIN for step daughter so I could claim on taxes for 2018.  I was denied and IRS wants me to file for ITIN when I submit my 2018 taxes which would be next year.  Spoke with my CPA about it and he advised ITIN are very hard to come by

 

I am hoping by april next year I will have a SS# for K2.

Health insurance companies want a SSN for government reporting purposes....However, it is not required for reporting.

Agreed - an SSN is not required for health insurance. The issue is getting a company (or insurer) to process the paperwork.
