For my fiance's K-1 visa interview, is it necessary to send certified copies of my birth certificate and divorce certificates?

I heard that in case these get lost in the mail, that it could be dangerous -- a possible situation for identify theft, if they got in the wrong hands. An agent from the IRS told me this as well as other sources. So I am nervous sending those certified documents through the mail overseas where anything could happen to those documents. But of course, if my fiance needs to have them then I will send. Does anyone have any information to help me with this? Thanks

Thanks for your reply. Maybe I am being overly worried, but I do not know why I should not worry about this, especially when an official has told me not to do this. Thanks to anyone who might reply.

We sent photocopies and we had no problems. I will bring the real one to the Interview- with a photcopied one. They will keep the photocopy.

Sorry, maybe my brain is not working today. I am trying to understand. Is it ok to send photocopies of my birth certficate and my divorce certifcate to my fiance for his interview? My problem is sending my certified birth and divorce certifcates through the mail overseasl, where they could possibly get lost and somone could take them and steal my identity. Frm what an official told me it is very dangerous to send a certified birth or divorce certifcate overseas in case it gets lost and stolen.

Are we talking about the US Citizen or non-US Citizen?

The US Citizen's birth cert is not needed for the interview.

A copy of the US citizen's passport is recommended to show the entry and exit stamps from visits.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Dear Yu and Dan, I am talking about the certified birth certificate and certified divorce certificate for the U.S. citizen. I am under the impression that my fiance will need these for his K-1 fiance visa interview in Abu Dhabi. This is what the VisaJourney K-1 visa tips states:

When you get the certified birth/divorce certificates and all the financial statements, GET 3 CERTIFIED

COPIES...that way you got real certified documents to submit, plus you have a copy for you and a copy

for your fiance...it just makes your whole life easier, and you don't have to worry about getting anything

back from anybody, you got it all and so does everybody else. ( I note, however, that you CAN submit

plain photocopies of certified documents, but you MUST have the originals if they ask for them, so if you

submit plain photocopies, then you MUST send originals or certified copies to the fiance for the

interview!)

So, this confuses me. What I mean by certified copies is the actual copies with the seal embossed in the document. (I read that the true actual original is not available to any person, but is kept in the Dept. of Health, etc. and the certified copy is as close to the original as one can get.) And, I was advised not to send the originals (actually certified copies) of my birth certificate or divorce certificate anywhere through the mail overseas. It could be very dangerous. But I do not know if my fiance (the non-U.S. citizen) will need my official certified birth certificate and divorce certificate. The statement from the visa journey tips makes it seem that my fiance will need these for his interview in Abu Dhabi. Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me or anyone else who reads this. I do not want to mess up my fiance's interview, so I am trying hard to understand. What the IRS agent as well as others told me scared me about sending those certified documents (birth or divorce certificates) through the mail, especially overseas. If they get lost or stolen, it could be so dangerous.

Often these documents are not asked for but they can be. That's why they say to have them available for the interview. I never mailed mine. I took them with me and left them (along with photocopies) with my wife.

If I hadn't done that, I wouldn't hesitate to send them via DHL. That's what you're going to be doing if they aren't available when they ask for them, only you'll be waiting until they get there and get submitted to overcome a denial. It's a risky process. Choose your poison.
