Filed N-400, received letter from state IRS that needs to pay tax due

My friend who also filed her N-400 this June 2018 have some questions and I hope someone can share their experience or comments.

She filed her N-400 first week of June 2018 and she already got the NOA and did her biometrics appointment and now waiting for interview.

Yesterday she got a letter from State IRS telling them that they have tax due and they need to pay it, meaning they got audited and they have option to appeal if the said amount is not correct.

Her are the questions, on the N-400 application, there is a question stated that if you have tax due to IRS and technically she answer the question as NO since they were not aware that they will receive a letter from state IRS saying that they have tax due and they need to pay it. How she can be able to deal with this when it comes to her N-400 application? Does she needs to inform USCIS regarding the letter from IRS? or this can be addressed during her interview?

Comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.

It was no when she filled out the form.  Now she needs to (1) make sure that is not a scam letter then (2) straighten it out soonest.

I even asked her if she was sure it's was not a scam letter and she said no, all of their information were stated on the letter. How she can straighten this?

This isn't a tax site.  Your wife at the time she filled out the application filled it out correctly.  The letter has a date if they ask.

I would suggest step 1 would be to contact the IRS.

Call IRS and if it’s too much for you to pay all at once , make payment arrangement and the letter from IRS to your interview . That’s what I did.

it's for my friend not for me, thank you and will let her know.

Your friend will be fine, as long as she takes the letter, it would be a good idea to pay the bill too before, or at least make a payment plan, She will be asked at the interview if she owes any Taxes, at least it's not federal taxes though!

Hi,

She will have one of 2 options (I'm a business owner and have come across this many times as an Insurance Agency Owner).

1) Pay the amount due - and leave the topic closed.

2) If the amount is to much - set up a payment plan and get a certificated letter from IRS to take to the interview to tell them after the application they were audited and charged additional tax and they are making payments on it (having a payment letter from IRS will satisfy this requirement).
