Will my current valid J-1 student visa be cancelled if I apply for a new one from another sponsor school AND it's denied?

Yes. Your visa will be canceled when you apply for a new visa. Not sure why would you need an old visa since you're done studying with that school anyways.

Wait are you still in the US? You can't apply for visa within US. You'd need to leave and apply in your country.

If you don't have to leave, stay.

Get the new I20 from the new school and maintain your status.

There is always a risk applying for a new one.

J1 visa is pretty tricky as it's more or less for temporary purpose. And usually you don't have to prove you have money to cover your study.

I'm not sure if other school will be ok accepting you as a J-1 student, as far as I know, you need scholarship or grants money of some sorts to support your study.

The better solution is to adjust from J1 to F1, that means you have to show you have money to cover a year of studying. However, the 2 year foreign residence is still in effect.

You know yourself better,  the solution depends on your long-term goal.

I think that you can transfer the same J1 to another institution.

You cannot change from J1 to F1 within the US if you have a 2 year residency requirement. That is a rule. However, you can apply for an F1 at your consulate. The advantage of changing to an F1 is that every trip home will count towards to your 2 years.

Yes, he can.

He can submit an I-539 Application to the USCIS without leaving the US. Of course, nothing can be sure of.

Thank you all for your suggestions! They can not just transfer my J1, because of their internal policy.

Switching to F1 is not an option for me, because under F1 my wife would not be able to legally work in the US. I am not subject to the 2-year requirement. Also, the school that made me the new offer provides enough funding. So, my single concern here is what happens to my current J-1 if my new visa application is denied. I would like to be able to continue studying in my current program if they don't grant me the new visa.

I can not see a reason why would they deny me, because I have no violation of the visa conditions. But still, I want to know my risks.

No, he cannot. I don't know why you would go about giving the incorrect information. A change of status from J1 to F1 is allowed ONLY IF the J1 holder does not have the 2 year residency requirement.

Where did you find that information?

I alsways use the website as reference, and there's no such thing as what you said.

One of the restrictions of a J1 with 2 year residency requirement is that you cannot change status within the US. That is in addition to become a permanent resident, get an H1B, etc. etc.

I had a J1 with such restriction.
