I’m doing this post because we were looking for something to help us in this process and didn’t find anything super helpful. So, I’m gonna write the experience we had with going to college while waiting for my AOS. (I applied for my AOS already, now waiting for the interview.)

We thought I had to wait for the Green card, so we didn’t even worry about anything (basically money to pay for it). I went to the university just to talk about the possibilities and she said I could start next semester as an International Student and when I had the Green Card, I could give them a copy and they would consider me a transfer student.

Then, the next worry is a loan. We don’t have the right for government aid(FAFSA) since we don’t have a real status, so we need a private loan. (Or, if you’re rich, just pay for it yourselves lol) Searching on Google, we saw that Discover had the best reviews. My husband’s credit was approved (a cosigner is needed, and they need to have credit score ran and approved), but they did not accept the NOA1 for the adjustment of status (I-797C). On their website says that to approve you, they’d accept I-94 (which everyone has), but nope. Anyway, we spent like 3 weeks receiving emails saying something was missing on my application, calling and receiving calls trying to see what could work for them to accept my application). I uploaded my K1 visa, my passport, I-797C (which is all we have before the green card), my marriage certificate… None of this was enough, they needed at least my EAD (which we all know it also takes a while too).  I mean, it’s pretty stupid that you have a cosigner to pay for it (if you don’t) and don’t get approved. So my husband got pissed and decided to look for another company. And Sallie Mae, in 1 hour, approved everything. It’s not an ad, guys. It’s just what worked for us. And it happens their interest rates were even lower than Discover.

It’s important to know that it’s not every university that will accept you as an International Student, I think they have different rules regarding that. I mean, I can’t guarantee that all of them will, but mine did.

But then we need Toefl test (Or IELTS, or any other English proficiency the university might take). Search about that too.

If you guys have any doubts regarding this, message me. If I know the answer, I will be happy to help.

-Wait until you get GC and living in that county for more than a year to get the in-state tuition. It just a year, so why we need to rush?

-Go to community college and finish the core class like History, Government, Arts...etc and save money.

-After about 2 year, you can transfer to another 4-year University.

My husband attends college right now as a regular student with in-state tuiition. We don't even have the EAD yet. You don't have to be an international student....

First off, the state tuition residency requirement is set by the school, not the state (ours was 2 years). Also, my wife only has 2 years of school left. She wants to start working - not drift for a year. We also didn't say you HAD to be an international student. My wife is considered an international transfer student because that's what she is. She started college in her country before coming here. You guys are missing the point of this article. We wrote this just to let people know that it is possible to attend college while on a K-1 and without an EAD or GC. We didn't know this was possible until months after she got here. We tried looking online if she was able to attend but there was a big lack of information. Also, the articles we found were ancient. We were just trying to give people tips on how to do this.
