Shipping stuff from the Philippines

When my Luz's time finally comes for her and her son to move here from the Philippines what is the best way to get their stuff here? They have a lifetime of possesions that they would like to bring but it will bankrupt me to have it all shipped here! Of course the furniture and electronics will all stay but they have all the other stuff of life to move. We figure that there is about 200KG of stuff! I hate to tell them that their lives will be reduced to what they can stuff into 4 suitcases (two each on the airplane). They will sell the furniture and electronics to partally offset the cost of the rest but FedEX and UPS want thousands for that kind of weight!! Any suggestions?

Well I'm sure you can provide them with the basic things there , so I suggest they just limit themselves with 2 balikbayan boxes and 2 suitcases each. It's not a good idea to bring big things over there.

I for one is leaving this May and I have to bring with me choice clothes and jackets and just small personal things.Paying for the excess luggage is not good as well.

Hi

Dont send it by UPS or Fedex. Gosh you will have to take a 2nd loan out on your home...:lol::lol:

Look into sea cargo..She will know. Forex (not Fedex) LBC, others. They can put there clothes inside a 20x20 box or maybe a bigger box. I think maybe a $100 to $200 a box.

So ask her about having it shipped by sea cargo. It takes about 30 days..

also when Luz's gets here, you can ship things back to the Philippines. I am sure she will collect gifts to send back to her family...

good luck

Thanks Yogib37. The time it takes to get it here is not a problem. They can pack enough stuff to hold them over until the rest gets here. Will this Forex do door to door? By that I mean will it get to my house in illinois or just port to port?

Thanks!

Unless they are bringing a bags of diamonds and gold or priceless pieces of art, just have them bring what can be packed in their suitcases. Anything they need can be bought once they get here.

There are things that cannot be bought here like pictures, trophies/awards and other mementos that are cherished more for sentimental rather than commercial value.

On the other hand, they don't have to take everything with them right away. They can just store them with family members and work on gradually sending them over without breaking the bank. I still have a lot of my old "sentimental" stuff at home and am planning on just taking them gradually back here each time we go home for a visit. This year we might be able to bring a lot back as there will be four of us travelling. Lots of boxes we can take on board with us!!:thumbs:

I guess my wife was different. She gave away to her family everything except for some clothes and photos.

Yes, everyone is different. My family came to Canada 16 years ago. I was 21 at that time and I remember we only brought 2 large suitcases each (so 8 in total). We brought stuff that had sentimental value to us and some clothes. My dad missed a lot of his material goods but my mom, brother and I were fine.

Before Rob and I got married last year, I went through my stuff again and came across some things I brought from the Philippines. It's not a lot (maybe just a small box of memorabilia) and I still plan on keeping them.

GaryC, maybe your wife can ask one of her close friends or relatives to help with packing. One of my friends helped me go through my stuff recently so I wouldn't have to pack it all when I get my visa (hopefully, sometime soon). It's amazing how much stuff I was able to give away.

I came here with 2 huge balikbayan boxes and a luggage, I took what I think I'll need. I left most of my clothes and other personal sentimental stuff back home. I cleared my room, so my mom can use it however she wants. I packed everything in a box, stored it in our attic, marked it with my name and put "Don't touch, I will come back for this!" Honestly, now that I have new things and belongings here, and new sentimental stuff to boot, I don't think I'll be importing what I left back home. It's always nice to come back to them that's for sure, but for now, I'm pretty much satisfied with what I have.
