There would be no talk radio without what Rush has done.  Pre-him, midday AM radio consisted chiefly of home-improvement shows and long-form garden shows.  (Nothing wrong with either, because both have loyal followings and make money for radio stations.)  However, Rush proved that conservative talk formats could be wildly popular and insanely profitable.

 

The above takes a circular route around to the essential answer to the quoted question.  Rush isn't popular because people agree with him -- he's popular because he gives voice to, analyzes, and puts into understandable language what a whole lot of people already think, and for whom no alternative would otherwise exist.  Indeed, his typical weekly audience was (last that I heard) around 20 million listeners.

 

The other conservative talk-radio hosts are as listened-to as they are now because Rush Limbaugh blazed the trail and proved beyond doubt that such formats had widespread appeal.

 

   I appreciate the response TBone. I guess I see talk radio different than news media, although there is some overlap. The only talk radio I really listen to is sports radio and the  occasional Dave Ramsey show, so I can't speak a lot to political talk radio.

 

   I'll take your word for it on Rush, but even with his large following, he is not mainstream according to the chart. Kind of my point really. The biggest demographic for the left is the main stream left wing media, while on the right, there is a large demographic for news souces that are much farther right of center. I would still like to know why FOX doesn't have more competition amongst mainstream right viewers.

Perhaps talk radio's "news & analysis" compares with the mainstream media's approach, albeit the former is chiefly conservative and the latter overwhelmingly not.

 

My thought was that, after 30 years, talk radio is also now mainstream as a method of transmission.

 

Rush has said in the past that one needs to listen to his shows regularly for 4 to 6 weeks before one gets an accurate handle on where he's coming from and via what avenues.  An extremely interesting experiment, if feasible, would be for you to listen regularly for a while and report back with your impressions and conclusions.  As an alternative, there's rushlimbaugh.com for transcripts of his monologues and discussions with callers (poorer substitutes for the real thing, and with no humorous interludes).  It would be great to hear informed feedback from someone of your thoughtful intellectual level.
