Down in the article it says " The documents said a TSA working group of 20 people, including a representative of the agency's administrator's office, met on June 21 to examine the potential risks of the policy change. An internal TSA memo dated July 17 from TSA Director of Enterprise Performance and Risk Strategy Jerry Booker to the TSA administrator's chief of staff, Ha Nguyen McNeill, outlines the group's findings. It contains no formal recommendation. "

Kind of feels like: well a plane with less than 60 people can't do that much damage, we can sacrifice them and put these 1000+ people somewhere else or let them go. Must be so boring to work at a tiny ### airport anyway. Super tiny airports don't even have TSA as it is now anyway.

I can’t think of any airports with airline coverage that don’t have TSA.  Do you know of some?

I see TSA as more of a stumbling block to travelers than a deterrence for terrorism, personally.  But they have caught people trying to carry on loaded weapons, grenades (mostly simulators, but still), and explosive devices such as stun grenades.  So I reckon they are doing SOME good for aviation safety.

Tiny regional airports. Like Manassas airport in Manassas, VA. It only has on-call CBP.

Some airports already have contracts with private companies to do the screening.  The challenges with removing TSA (or reliable screening) from smaller airports is to rescreen passengers/luggage on their connecting flights.

Best pre-flight screening I ever experienced was done by a dog at our hotel pre-departure - cuteness and efficiency.

They have also allowed many undercover afents to sneak guns and explosives through. But the people who can't hold down a job at McDonalds need a job too I guess.

They busted me with a jar of guava jelly once, so they are keeping the skies safe from whatever it is jelly might do.

Last time I flew to the Philippines I witnessed a Chinese man ahead of me in line who had a hard time speaking English be yelled at and insulted over it. At the time I had a spare laptop I was taking to give my wife and I forgot I had 2 so I only took one out of the bag for the xray. All of a sudden I see a TSA supervisor angerly holding up my laptop and asking who it belonged to. As soon as I told him it was mine he went off on an angry power tripping rampage against me in front of everyone for not following instructions. He was upset that he had to do further "screening" on my laptop. If it was someone else who didn't have the power to detain me and make my life a living hell I would have told him what I thought of him but I used all the restraint I had and didn't say anything. As far as I could tell most of the TSA agents I saw that day (especially supervisors) were very rude and unprofessional towards most people. Compare that to the communist Chinese security people in the Hong Kong airport on my layover. They were friendly and professional towards everyone. I forgot to remove something from my pocket when going through the metal detector and they politely reminded me. Even the M-16 weilding security guards in the malls in the Philippines were more friendly and respectful than the TSA. They addressed everyone as sir and maam, held doors for people and one of them even came over and helped my wife and I bag groceries in a grocery store once. It's an interesting sight seeing an M-16 wielding security guard bag groceries. It's sad that were supposed to be the most free nation on Earth and security guards in a communist dictatorship and a third world nation treat people with more respect and dignity. I am all for abolishing the TSA and using private security in their place.

This would really be the challenge here wouldn't it?  Would flights from these small airports be treated like international arrivals sans CBP?  Are the larger airports set up to keep these folks isolated from the screened passengers?  Major challenges.

Yes, I wondered the same things......it would make flying from these non-secure airports even more painful for passengers...

No doubt!  If I had the choice of a two hour drive to a hub, or going through a small airport without TSA screening (sure, they would still probably have some type of screening) I think I would choose the drive.

Exactly our situation here. we are about 60-70 mins south of Hartsfield-Jackson. I can be at our regional airport in about 20 mins. It makes zero sense to drive out there and then have to transfer in ATL. The gumberment keeps trying to subsidize little small airline to provide service, but it never works.

I do think the provide service to Biloxi 2 or 3 times a month.
