Okay so my apologies if this is in the wrong spot and also because I know it doesn't really have much to do with a K1 however... If I could get any insight from other brides as to what to do with your save the dates? We have a wedding date in mind which is far in advance (taking into consideration the K1 Process).. of course this date is up in the air but since we are still doing a very traditional wedding we would like to send out Save the Dates... just not 100% sure if we should even bother.

Help!

I would not bother with it, we didn't. We sent out invitations the day he was approved at the embassy and that was good enough as most everyone had been aware of the situation anyway. You have 6 months from the date of the medical to enter the US, and once there 90 days to marry. If a Save the Date is that important you could delay entering the US a while.

When you're doing a K1 it's impossible to have a traditional wedding. You're gonna have to settle for a 3 month short notice (after you cross the border you have 3 months to marry so you have less than 3 months to plan it) or you're gonna have to get married at a courthouse, I think it's safe to say that 99% of the people here did, and then just do a real wedding later when you can plan it. Unfortunately you can't plan a wedding like you want on the K1.

I completely agree with @yuna628, I wouldn’t worry about StD cards.  In our case my fiancé at the time used almost the entire six month period of the visa so we could plan a nice medium sized traditional wedding and we sent out invitations early enough after the visa was approved and the date was set to avoid anything else.

Good Luck!

We are doing a quick courthouse wedding as soon as I arrive to the United States on the K1..... but we are also planning a traditional religious wedding much later in 2020. Although the process makes it hard to plan certain things I believe it is still possible to plan a wedding like everyone else ... its just making sure you don't start throwing your money around on deposits... but it is possible.. in fact very possible.

Not entirely correct.  A couple can actually take almost 9 months to plan a wedding as the fiancé has six months to use the visa and then 90 days after entry.  A rather large traditional wedding is difficult on a K1, but not impossible with flexibility once the visa is approved.  We had a nice traditional outdoor wedding with approximately 100 of our closest friends and family with no need to go to a courthouse.

In that case, I would wait until you have the official wedding to set the date for the more traditional celebration.  Then you have all the time in the world to get the various notices and invitations out.

Would you really wanna be away from your fiance for 6 months just to plan a wedding? I was on the next plane out when I got visa in hand.

Is your traditional wedding going to be in the US? As if not, you might need to factor in timings for getting AP so you can travel. I got married in a courthouse in the US and then we had a traditional wedding in the UK 9 months after, and it was stressful waiting for the AP document as it took much longer than anticipated.

Then yeah don't bother with any of that until you're actually there. 2020 is a long ways away and you have a lot of time after you get here to plan it better. You don't need any plans for a courthouse wedding. You go with your IDs get a license back two days later and boom married. After you're all settled and sent out AOS you worry about the other wedding. Too much going on with moving and applying for AOS to be dealing with headaches of wedding planning.

Yep. We planned our wedding throughout the entire process (not something I recommend actually), but we only dropped deposits on things until we were sure everything was clear. We found people willing to work with us, and if they weren't, then they didn't need our money. It was a small wedding, and we didn't have 100 people to invite, but it worked for us.** ^_^

It is going to be a traditional wedding in the United States after all the visa stuff is said and done. I won't have to wait for AP as we are marrying in New York.

We are doing a courthouse wedding upon me entering the united states and after that planning our traditional/religious ceremony/reception.

We are also doing a traditional wedding. I'm starting to tell my out of town guests our "hopeful" date with a caveat that it could be much later. They are "penciling in" the date but not buying tickets until we have a visa & an actual date. I'm taking the wedding planning approach of selecting things that I can that have flexibility or no deposit and making a short-list of who I will call to book when I have a final date. So I'm doing the work in advance and booking everything when the visa is in hand. Hopefully it will work, but we are skipping the traditional save the dates because we want to communicate it's a fluid yet hopeful date that no plans should be made based on it until we tell them.

It is totally possible then. But like both of you have mentioned keep it "fluid" which is exactly my intention. I will forgo the Save the Dates and when we have our Canadian Engagement Party and Our American Engagement party we will mention the process and why we won't be sending them out!

Thank you for showing that is it possible to do things like those "non-visa" brides!!
