Hi. I'm a May 2018 K1 fiancè visa beneficiary from the Philippines. My fiancè lives in Ripon, California.

I have a Bachelors Degree and I am a licensed professional English teacher in Phils without experience. I want to practice my profession in California or at least be in lined with it - Work in the same field (Teacher Aid/ Assistant). I just would like to ask how is the current status of Filipino teachers in America specifically English teachers? How about Teacher Assistant or Teacher Aid?

I heard news that English Teaching and Teacher Aid/ Assistant jobs are given to locals only. Correct me if I am wrong. Can you share your thoughts? Please enlighten me 😁 🙏

Hi! I can't answer your question specifically, but I can tell you that this will depend greatly on the area and job market in that area. Since you are coming on a K-1 it will be a long time before you have a work permit, so use that time to volunteer in areas of your profession. That will help build your network and connections when it is time to get a job. There are many English programs in the US outside of the school systems that accept volunteers. So I would recommend starting that way and building your experience as a volunteer. That will also help you learn American cultural expectations for teachers and teaching styles that we use here in the USA. Best wishes!

You need to be licensed in the US.

Which city/state will you be coming to? Many have ESL classes for foreigners.

So you can get experience in a few different ways before moving teaching in a public/private school on a more permanent job.

You will have access to a stable Internet, why don't you teach online to Foreigners from home?

My husband works for the EL (English Learners) program in the school system, elementary aged kids. He is considered a teacher's aid. He'd love to be a teacher one day but has to take classes and stuff, which costs lots of money and time  :-/

How did he become a teacher's aid? Did he took exams or short course class?

It will take lots of money and time to study again. Does he love teaching kids? :)

No there weren't any specific classes he had to take. There've been some extra ones they offer for different certifications like "how to intervene/discipline a misbehaving child without hurting him or yourself" (my vernacular), and CPR classes.

He loves working with kids. He worked for the summer school program they have and was pretty much a tutor. In any case, it gets his foot in the door in the direction he wants to go.

That's good! I am happy for him. Thank you for sharing it with me :) If you don't mind, how much does he make as a teacher assistant? I am really interested as I really want to be in the same line I am in. But if you don't like to share it, I fully understand.

between $16 and 17/hour something. Makes more than me though I have the awesome benefits package working for the bank. He also take extra translating jobs for parent-teacher conferences and translate IEP documents which pays and additional $16/hour, although he often gives the document jobs to me since I have more time sitting around doing nothing.

My fiancè is in Ripon, California :)

I was an online English teacher here in Phils. It's homebased. I stopped teaching online because of internet issues currently in Phils.

Thank you so much. How about teacher aid or teacher assistant? :)

Take a look here. This lists the requirements for teaching in CA.

https://www.teachercertificationdegrees.com/certification/california/

As an alternate suggestion, have your husband send you links of some of the better local public schools in his Area, and look up the English teachers on them and send them a friendly email and start your networking with them.

Hopefully a few of them will be friendly enough to tell you what you need, and if they will have an opening soon as well.

Best of Luck to you.

My fiancé plans to come here and work her butt off with me for the next 5-6 years, then once we have a nice nest ready, we will plan to start moving to the Phils permanently and start some nice little businesses.

You will need to go through a teacher credential program in California in order to work as a full teacher here. I suggest you look into paraeducator positions. These are like teacher's aides for kids with special needs and you usually just need a high school diploma and to pass an exam (depends on what district you work for).

Thanks for the suggestion. I will keep these in mind. I just want to know my options 'cuz I want to help my future husband with our household too :)

That is a great idea! What part of the Phils are you planning to do business? :)

Unlike the Philippines where you must be a native born citizen to work and get many professional license,  professions including nursing, In the USA we do not restrict people based upon their nationality
