Got my Social and looking for work.. Alot of the first interviews and replies  are all from scam like  companies that want you to do Marketing kind of stuff. Any ideas where to find a normal okay job I am not scared to do a little physchiall work or stand  for long periods of time. I understand that my lack of  college degree  and new citizenship  I will have to work from the bottom  to get to the top.  EDIT: just wanted you to know we have not updated our timeline.

What did you do before you moved?

I actually own a resume writing company and see no reason why you have to begin totally from the bottom, especially since you are only coming from Canada where the educational and work system is nearly identical to ours.  You would (presumably) have a solid work history, education, and references. And speak fluent/native English. If you speak French fluently as well, that can be a big selling point.

Indeed.com is typically where I advise clients to look online. There are also other, industry-specific job boards, and of course, good old-fashioned networking is mandatory. So get out there and MEET people!

As Cyberfx pointed out, LinkedIn is also an EXCELLENT resource! Make those connections!

As to starting from the bottom? No not entirely, maybe slightly less than you would have in Canada or had before but not like completely starting over... A lot of people do understand depending on their work history and all sometimes they have to go down a level maybe at first but still.

There are a lot of "too good to be true" jobs out there, and generally they are just that, too good to be true. It can take abit of looking honestly, and just have to keep at it.

While my husband did have some US work experience from 2 J-1 internships previously, he has a bachelors degree and all but he understood he may not just get a management position right out of the gate, so he worked a job first in just a general position before finding a new company to move to for management. Just have to keep looking.

Possible, even some job sites like LinkedIn and what not have some junk on them.

That is true. Also what I found on LinkedIn though is that job recruiters will contact me for IT/Telecommunication jobs either in CA(where I just moved from) or here in NC but at almost half the 1/4 or a third of the pay I am making now.

I had a phone call on Friday asking if I was looking for a job and I replied that "I wasn't looking but let me hear the job anyway". Well the job was for a full time Senior Help Desk Administrator and they wanted to start my pay off at $22 an hour. I said "you know that is below industry standard for this job and location right?" and they said that is the best they can start with right away and I said "Thank you but no thank you".  I will stay right where I am at making $36 an hour thank you.

Try this idea, previously posted by the member Darnell:

Each city has a chamber of commerce.  Find it.

Once you find it - talk with the secretary - tell her you want a schedule of events and let her know you'd like to attend.

Then - go in person to the Chamber of Commerce Office - talk with the President of the Chamber, tell him/her you want to volunteer at several of their events.

Attendees at chamber events are business owners and sales geeks, all looking for new business.  It usually is an informal-enough gathering where you can approach people and talk with them.

Now, the cool thing about being a volunteer there - is that you will be talking to everyone at least once - you might be at the reception table, you might be at the greeters table, you might help to run the audio/video system - whatever - but - the point is that you can meet everyone there, face to face.

Attend 2 or 3 of these, and folk remember you.  When folk remember you, they will remember you are seeking employment and will consider you, because you're just not some name on a piece of paper - they met you at a chamber event and know that you were volunteering, helping out the chamber.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck!

PS - live in a really small town? go to the biggest town that's within 15 miles of your house.

I second LinkedIn and Indeed as pretty good sources. I also like looking on Glassdoor.

Try job fairs and volunteering as a way to check out what's in your area and meet people. Networking and making connections are really important, and you may hear about a position just by talking with people.

Take note of some businesses near you, go to their websites, and see if they're looking for people directly on their careers pages.

Lastly, if you're not picky, I would check out some temp agencies in your area. This allows you to have an income while still doing your job search until you can find something more permanent. Sometimes temp positions even lead to full-time positions if they like you enough, although I've heard this is quite rare.

Good luck!

EDIT: I just realized this was more than a month ago, oops! I hope you've found something, regardless!
