Hi all, just wanted to let you guys know that yesterday I came back from overseas. I was travelling from Poland to Chicago via LOT Arlines. I had no issues travelling with expired green card and extension letter.

At the check in in Poland, the guy was looking at my GC for couple of minutes so before he said anything I gave him my letter. Then he started making calls, but he could not get through so I told him that his supervisor should be familiar with that document. Then he announced that he is familiar with it, but he still needs to report it to the immigration department. He told them on the phone that I have expired green card and the letter. He confirmed the type of document and that it is 18 month extension. Then I was good to go. I didn't have to show it again.

At Chicago there was a long line for passport control so I asked where should I go. They sent me to the expressed line. I gave him everything right away, he read the entire letter and asked me how long I was in Poland (4 weeks),  if  I visited family (yes) where is my husband (Colorado) and why I didn't bring him with (Told him he could  not take that much time off work). After those answers I was good to go.

Everything was pleasant and not stressful or intimidating.

I received a letter today that they are reviewing my case and will use biometrics from the past. Th fee I paid for that will not be refunded😕

That’s good news. I haven’t heard anything from them since I got my extension letter in late August. I will give them a call tomorrow. Hopefully they’ll use my previous biometrics as well.

A quick update for everyone's benefit, I went home to England for Christmas, flew back a couple days ago from Heathrow to LAX. No problems with just the expired green card and I-797, in fact it seemed like everyone I interacted with in immigration at LA was expecting to see lots of people in our situation. I haven't yet had my biometrics or got the appointment letter, and my receipt number doesn't work in the USCIS case status website yet (DHS website says they have my case, and there's nothing for me to do yet).

To buy the flights from American airlines in the first place we had to put in the expiration of my green card, and since it wouldn't accept the expired date, we just put 18 months beyond that (when my I-797 is valid until). No problem checking in at Heathrow, they didn't even ask to see my green card or any visa documentation. We assumed this was because we had filled it in online when purchasing tickets, but I was still a bit surprised. Immigration took one look at the green card, I-797 and that was it. No questions, or checking electronically, not even my fingerprints this time. Only issue I ran into was that because I didn't have to go to the automatic kiosk that scans your passport and green card etc, and covers your customs declaration, I had to find a customs declaration form, which I couldn't do until I was in line waiting to be seen. Just something to be aware of.

TL:DR No problem re-entering USA from UK with just an expired green card and I-797, before biometrics appointment.

Has anybody gotten their biometrics notices yet? Anybody tried calling USCIS to inquire about the biometrics?

Back before the notices came I called the USCIS about our biometrics. October 15th to be exact. They said it should arrive within a couple weeks as it takes time for them to get to service requests. Well.... January 7th I got an email that stated they have received the service request and that they have requested the biometrics appointment but it may take up to 60 days or more. So maybe March?

Been meaning to right that, just forgot, but seriously delays all around and I am sure the shutdown doesn't help either.
