I travel to Europe often, every other time upon return to ORD I get escorted to a room full of non-US people where I have to wait for ~10-30min while they perform additional checks. Sometimes they call me up to ask additional questions, sometimes just return the documents and say that everything is fine. I get the I-551 stamp in my passport renewed every 6 months just in case I get any troubles while abroad (some foreign airline agents trust passport stamps more than USCIS letters).

I see. I’m a bit hesitant to ask for an i-551 stamp just because I heard some centers get your expired green card in return, and I’d rather keep it along with the i-797 letter. Did you get to keep your green card after getting the stamp?

I got my card back after getting the stamp. Mine was done at the downtown Chicago USCIS office. They did cut the edge of the card though to clearly show it was void.

Same as Zkot4ov posted, they clipped my GC and returned it to me. I had no choice because I had to travel and the I-797 letter took too long (6 weeks) to arrive.

Gotcha. So as long as I have the I-797 letter along with my expired green card and a valid passport (still my country’s), I don’t necessarily need to also get an I-551 stamp, right?

In theory, this should be sufficient. But keep in mind that you may be asked to produce the I-797 (or I-551) not only upon arrival in the US, but also abroad (e.g., when checking in for a flight to the US, as soon as they notice the expiration date of your GC). The major disadvantage of the I-551 is that is has to be renewed every 6 months, while your I-797 is probably valid for 18 months.

Thank you! I already have the i-797 letter, yes it is valid 18 months so I should be good in that area. And hopefully they don’t take the original and I just have to keep showing it. Also so far I only have this one international trip possibly coming up, I’ve been mainly avoiding any outside US trip because of this whole waiting game 😕

So this morning, I submitted my N400 Application online. I read multiple posts about filing N400 while waiting on I751 and decided that it is wise to file instead of waiting. My I751 file is in Potomac and they are working on June 2018 cases right now. So I am hoping either I get my 10 years GC before my N400 interview or they both are adjudicated at the same time (sometime next year). Fingers crossed. 


Anyone else in the same boat as me?

July 2015 -Married US Citizen 

Sept 2015- Applied for GC 

Nov 2016- Got conditional GC 

Aug 2018- Applied for I751 (Houston)

June 2019- Case transferred to Potomac

July 2019- Biometrics Aug 2019- Eligible for N400 and filed online.

My timeline:

July 2015 -Married US Citizen 

Sept 2015- Applied for GC 

Nov 2016- Got conditional GC 

Aug 2018- Applied for I751 (Houston)

June 2019- Case transferred to Potomac

July 2019- Biometrics Aug 2019- Eligible for N400 and filed online.

 

We have almost the same timeline but our case was never transferred. As of today I have heard nothing regarding the pending I-751 application, it's been stuck on biometrics completion since last September.

I don't now if it matters, but as part of the N-400 application we submitted a letter requesting to have both adjudicated at the same time. Wait time is still 2 months, time to completion 3 months.

Has anybody gotten this message on the old USCIS website before? I check my account once a day, today it says "It was reported to us that your IP address or internet gateway has been locked out for a select period of time. This is due to an unusually high rate of use...." 

Same thing when I log in to my account on the old site.
