Income tax questions...

do i need to amend my 2017 tax return...?

I chose the single option since it kept asking for spouse SSN (when selected married) which I don’t have for my spouse he’s never been in the country nor worked; will that cause any issue when submitting docs at NVC

You will need to amend it.

FIling tax as single when married can cause a red flag in the eyes of the consular officer.

Thanks Abies for the information. I also was going to file married and my accountant told me I couldnt since he does not have a valid SS# and he still not in the USA. I will reach out to her again and converse with her in reference to amending my 2017 taxes. As for now I sent my 2017 taxes w/other supporting documents and recently got a checklist form NVC that I forgot to checkmark the first two boxes on the I-864EZ form nothing more. Hopefully I will not have any issues.  I filed head of household on mine.

Looks like a lot of us are waiting for CC! A little update on mine: Fully submitted everything on Saturday.. I received and email Sunday that the case was updated. Went on CEAC to take a look, and it seems the DS-260 was approved! The civil documents and Affidavit of Support are still in "submitted" status, so waiting for them to be accepted.

Fingers crossed for a quick CC for all!

Congrats! I submitted Saturday as well!

did the status on the IV Applicaion change from completed to approved? I had heard that the status for AOS and Civil Documents would change to something like “At NVC”. I will keep my eye on that now 😄

Hello everyone!

Recently started to follow this thread... I apologize ahead if my following questions have already been asked and answered.

So..., NVC received my case on 8/7/18; since called them twice already, one rep said wait up to 8 weeks, the second one said up to 6 weeks.  However, from  a few posts, I noticed cases are being assigned bet 3-6 weeks in reality...and not much one can do aside from keep calling and waiting until it’s received.

Nevertheless, I still have a few questions :

How do you know if you will be electronic processing? Which countries are eligible (how do you find out) ? Once fees are paid and docs submitted, how long for NVC to review and complete case? How much longer ‘til an interview?

Hi there and welcome!

I’ve received a case number after 9 weeks.

Some embassies recently changed from mailing processing to electronic processing so best thing to do to be completely sure is to call and ask about your Embassy method on how to submit documents.

I’ve got a Case Completed in 9 business days.

Its been a week i’ve since I received CC and I’m currently waiting for an interview date -i will get one accordingly to available slots from my chosen Embassy. So check with other VJ members how long it’ll take to get one in Haiti

Good luck to you and call to find out :)

Speedy CC to you

If you were considered married during the tax year, you can't file as Single or as Head of Household as both of those filing statuses are for people who were considered unmarried for the tax year. (Source: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/determining-your-correct-filing-status)

If your spouse doesn't have a SSN/ITIN, then you would select Married Filing Separately as your filing status and you have to paper file your return. This is because electronic filing platforms won't allow you to leave the spouse SSN/ITIN blank, but a paper form will. I don't know if it's strictly necessary, but I also attached an explanatory statement to my return when I filed noting that my husband is not subject to US taxes and doesn't have a SSN or ITIN and the return was accepted with no issue.

I am also in the same boat. So basically, I can file as married filing separately and once my spouse arrives to the US and gets SSN, I can amend my tax so that I can get my tax return right?
