Hi I didnt know where to put this, but I hope someone can help, as the passport services didnt know! :help:

My hubby and I are moving in June to the usa..he is a british citizen and in his passport his immigration visa is stamped. His passport expires jan 2007, so he was going to renew it over here now before we move to get it out of the way. HOwever, what about his visa in his old passport? Apparrently they cut up the old passport, so would they put a visa on the new passport? or what should we do, any one done this?

He should wait and renew his passport once he is in the US.... he can get it done at the embassy in Washington... it takes obout 2 - 3 weeks and they will return his old passport with the new one... that way you will have both to take to the AOS intervview.....

Good Luck

Better yet, wait till Dec 2006, then renew at Embassy. That way, he will likely have the plastic GC in hand.

He should renew his passport over here in the USA after he moves. The British Embassy will return his old passport with a corner of the front cover cut off, so he will still have his visa available for the AOS interview. I would suggest filing for renewal after you have filed for AOS.

Here is the page on the embassy web site where you can get the necessary forms.

Note that your profile information is a little vague as to what status he is actually arriving in. Did you file DCF? Did you file for a K-3?

Best of luck,

Hi he has a k3 visa. We didnt want to do it at the usa, because the embassy is 4 hours away from where we live, and that will be a pain to drive that far just to get a passport renewed. ugh.

Here's a link for the UK passport (in US) renewal procedure--please ignore my comparative (to Canadian passport renewal) rant in the last post.

Thanks for info. I have decided that we are going to mail the forms for his passport renewal(uk forms) with passport to his moms after we get to the us. She will then mail said info onto passport place for us(using her address on forms)it will come back to her in 2 weeks and she will then mail back to us. £51. done and dusted. I am sorry, but there are loopholes and this is one we are taking. We will not be able to afford to drive to the embassy in atlanta, fork out money for this passport to be renewed, fork out money for a hotel room, etc etc when i can cheat. thanks! Also, when i phoned the uk passport place they did say if i put a cover letter in with my renewal(if we did it now)explaining he needed the visa to enter the states...they would then return the old passport with the new, but it would be cut. He then proceeded to say that most countries will accept this anyway, that i should contact the american embassy in london to make sure though.

Just phoned the american embassy in london. They have given me an email address to email the passport section of the american embassy..so I will let you know what they say, for anyone going through this future purposes.

I think (but someone correct me if I am wrong) that you can renew your UK passport by mail to the embassy in the USA and that the service is much faster and efficient than passport services in the UK! I certainly wouldn't bother risk sending it via his Mom.

All of us UK citizens here in the USA will need to renew our passports at some time or another and very few live within travelling distance of a UK embassy, so I am positive there is no requirement to attend in person.

You don't have to go any further than the post box to get his new passport, GeorgiagalinUK!

If your passport contains visas valid for countries other than the US, Australia or Canada, and is still valid, it may be cross-linked to the new passport. Please indicate at Section 8 if you require this service (For cost, see 'fees' on main page of website).

Solves that problem....

Really, you're making it harder than it needs to be!!

Having the corner cut off the old passport does NOT invalidate the visas in it if they are still valid. The visa has its own expiry date stamped on it... You just have to carry both passports with you when you travel.

ALL DONE!!!!!!!!

When I traveled to US before on my tourist visa it was inside my old passport, so I just carried the 2 passports with me all the time, the old one and the new one. They don't completely destroy your old passport when they renew it, all they do is cut the edges off of it, at least that's what they do in Israel, so I was able to carry both passports with me. Never caused me any troubles.
