Immigrants can vote once they become a citizen. Why should they vote before then? No other country in the world lets non-citizens vote, why would the US?

I don't really care about other countries. We are talking about the US.

In the US, states and local municipalities have the right to allow their immagrants to vote.

They pay taxes and contribute to their respective community.

Who are you to tell them that they shouldn't be able to serve their civil responsibility.

Again... state's right issue. The state has the prerogative to allow this and it is usually limited to very specific small cases. It is also untrue that no other country in the world allows this. They do in fact, and usually in the same limited ways an individual state does. I'm not even going to go into the historical context of allowing this too. In my state, our Constitution recognizes the autonomy to local municipalities on the subject. Not every town feels it appropriate, some do.

School board elections are seen as a one such subject that affects both the immigrant and a citizen - as they pay taxes and their children uses these services.

I applaud your sensibility and your ability to recognize a mistake being made.  As the immigrant yourself, it is apparent this is not a good practice.  If only everyone here could see that.

Why would you think immigrants don't pay taxes?

You forgot to put illegal in your statement

The statement I quoted and the previous ones in the chain are all talking about legal immigrants. The topic is also about legal immigrants.

Those of you going off topic about illegal aliens are starting to confuse yourselves, it seems.

I think the problem is the link that mentioned San Fran allowing immigrants to vote in school board elections also allowed undocumented immigrants to do so as well (the premise is undocumented immigrants have their kids in the system the same as legal immigrants and USCs). And to me this does not matter that much - it was a ballot measure and voted on legally, and it is one of those states that has such laws to allow this to happen. It's a state's rights issue, which supposedly those who swerve over to the right side of the road like to fiercely defend. As a libertarian minded person, that lives in a state where such issues are written into our Constitution and a handful of small towns do allow immigrants to participate on a limited basis, this isn't a problem to me (even NY allowed this for some time until they stopped school board elections).

But yes a lot of confusion here... the topic at hand is about the USCIS providing grants to organizations to help legal immigrants navigate the paperwork to citizenship. I imagine this would include advice, study materials etc. It's a topic that came up last year too I think. The amount of money put elsewhere would literally do nothing to help solve the current problems plaguing the agency.

Which has nothing to do with the topic or KeithandArileidi's statement.

Keith is not the OP, so the topic is not about his link.  But anytime CA is involved in a discussion about immigrants, one would be foolish to exclude illegal immigrants, since CA is very proud of their sanctuary activity.  If you choose to ignore that fact, it’s fine.  But not all of us do.

You were responding to them. In fact you asked the question directly to them.

The OP is not talking about illegal immigrants either. People are introducing off topic material to the discussion and then getting confused about what is being discussed. I'm ignoring your posts on illegal immigrants because they are off topic and side tracking the actual discussion that people are trying to have.

Well, why are people even talking about voting? Isn't the original post about how USCIS is using their money for grants t to help LPR's become citizens instead of easing up on the backlog? Sure they talked about voting, about LPR's becoming citizens to so they can vote. So why are we then discussing none citizen voting? LPR's are not going to be able to vote who gets to be president anytime soon.

Probably because the OP made the comments about immigrant voters, but I agree, there is nothing in the article specifically about voting. There are certainly several other reasons why people would want or need to naturalize that have nothing to do with voting.
