I know there are many discussion about this already, but I have found a document that can make many members feel more comfortable instead of letting it hang over the head.

Today, when I talked to the DSO at my school, the answer was pretty much similar to whatever found on the forum. He basically said:

"We do not terminate your status just because you want it. You would have to violate it by not enrolling in school or enrolling part time.

Please provide a copy of your I-485 receipt notice and include your student ID."

However, in the pdf on ICE website (link), it clearly said:

"*When a nonimmigrant has a pending change of status, keep the SEVIS record in Initial status until the change of status is adjudicated. If necessary, defer the Program Start Date until the change of
status adjudication. If a record is activated in error, use the corrections menu to make it Initial or ask for a data fix. Otherwise the person may have a terminated SEVIS record instead of a cancelled
record. If a record is in Initial status, and the nonimmigrant withdraws his or her change of status, Cancel the record."

So now, it gets a little clearer, but there are still rooms for interpretation.

Putting a SEVIS record in Initial status could lead to many ways to interpret if the application is ultimately denied.
