Did they state why they deported him?  From what I've read, if you file solo I-212, its much faster than having to file both I-212 and I-601.  Our fingers our crossed on this one.  I know exactly what you mean about the time apart.  We are going through the same thing exact thing.  Its very hard and you have to have a lot of patience.  I try and tell myself that all will have been worth it in the end.  I repeat it over and over, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  Keep us updated as you move along...

There is no standard time on a I 212 unlike a I 601 due to the way they are handled.
