What service center will we get?

Hi,

Me and my girlfriend (us citizen) are considered getting married in my home country (Sweden, I still live there too), and then apply for the CR1-visa. However I am looking at the processing times, and they are freaking me out. They are currently up to 22 months at the California Service Center.

I guess my main question is, are we more likely to get the California service center because she lives in California? Or is it completely random? Are they currently taking more cases at the other centers to relieve the California one? Or am I just gonna have to wait....

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

1.  You will have no choice of USCIS service centers.  They are assigned strictly by USCIS policy (probably workload distribution).

2.  The average time from filing CR-1 paperwork to having the visa in hand is currently 12-14 months.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

As an example, my husband lives in California and we did not get the California service center, but as stated before you don't really know until you file. Congrats on the marriage, and good luck with everything!

Start preparing the petition immediately so it's ready to go as soon as you have your marriage certificate.

I'm from Sweden too and my husband is from Wisconsin. We got the Nebraska Service Center.

I believe the California Service Center handles cases for permanent residents (not U.S. citizens) who file for spouses. Since your spouse is a U.S. Citizen, then the application will not go to California. But overall for a U.S. Citizen filing for a spouse it will be on average 11-15 months.

4-24-17 I-130 sent to Chicago Lock Box

4-25-17 NOA 1 & sent to TSC

11-15-17 NOA 2

12-26-17 Case sent to Dept. of State

1-08-18 NVC Received case

3-12-18 Case Number Assigned / AOS & IV Fees Paid

3-14-18 DS-260 Completed

3-16-18 Uploaded Civil Documents

3-21-18 Uploaded AOS Documents

3-26-18 Checklist to reupload docs

3-29-18 Finished uploading docs

4-4-18 Case Complete

4-13-18 Received interview email

Yes, but USCIS doesn't issue visas.  Average processing time for and I-130 for spouse of US Citizen is 6 to 9 months.  The rest of the time involves getting to and through the Dept. of State, not USCIS.
