They are working towards a "zero tariff deal". That's actually great for both sides. Working our way back to where we started.

Trump said yesterday "tariffs are the greatest". Today they are working towards zero tariffs. I can see why some people think he has multiple personality disorder.

This is what I suggested in another thread not long ago:  tariffs shouldn't be viewed as permanent or set in concrete; they're an eye-opener to other countries as to what THEY might be doing that can be adjusted more equitably.  Remember that the President is proficient in making deals.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Looks like the EU blinked.

Winning again.

And so many were losing their mind over this.

The EU has been screwing us, just a little, for a while because we allowed it.  That's going to end.

Can't blame them.  I suppose if China or OPEC would allow us to screw them a little we would too.

Or rather Trump blinked?  Let's look at the facts:

  • Trump's withdrawing his threat of 20% tariff on European cars …
… while European tariffs on American cars remain in place.
  • Europe's promising …
    … nothing, really.
Well, they say they'll import more soy and LNG.  Which is not really a promise but more a forecast based on current economic developments (China tariffing US soy, European countries expanding their LNG terminal capacities).
  • Trump and Juncker also agreed to free-trade negotiations.  Which sounds a lot like TTIP, something that Trump was very much opposed to back in 2016.

Juncker came to Washington to avert new tariffs.  He got what he wanted while not giving away anything, not making any concessions.

Anyway, if they prevented a new trade war escalation then that's a win-win.  Doesn't really matter who "blinked".  Except for some people's ego, maybe.

He said if he was elected he would renegotiate the awful deals past administrations had allowed to happen.

He has kept his promises and delivered. Drives the MDL nuts.

That's the thing really. This was the deal they would have been working towards anyway, except Trudeau got on the wrong side of Trump's ego at the G7 and it all came crashing down. It's not so much about winning, it's about Trump making sure everyone know it's him doing the winning.

Honestly, does technique matter all that much when results are being achieved?

I truly wonder whether the President intentionally "acts" the way he does precisely so that everyone with whom he interacts is kept off-balanced and startled, thus giving our side the advantage.  It won't work all the time, but it sure isn't a pure negative.
