I'm not in the SS system, though I applied for SSN with my DS-260. Should I worry?

Hey all,

Ive been in the USA for a week, and applied for social security number as part of my DS-260 when going though consular processing for permanent resident status.

Because I'm due to start work on July 30 I just went to my local social security card office (in Brooklyn, NY) just in case they might have my number already. They said I'm not even in the system.

Is this normal, or is it possible that the DOS/USCIS has messed up somewhere after I requested it during the DS-260 application?

That shouldn't be the case because these things are automatic now. So maybe USCIS made a mistake. Call USCIS and speak to a tier 2 and see what they say. My guess is it's gonna take more than 5 days for this to be solved though.

yeah, I figured there may be have been a mistake. But then I wondered, since it's only been a week and the process can take up to three, maybe i'll just have to wait.

Anyway, I ave a call back with a tier 2 so let's see. Thanks for your response!

  • 2 weeks later...

Recently, there are many cases lost their green card via mailbox. I recommend you guys should do these steps after arriving the US:

- Notify the post office about your name and address.

- Sign up the Informed delivery service of USPS via this website: https://informeddelivery.usps.com/box/pages/intro/start.action

Everyday, USPS will send a text message or email attached with the photo of envelopes to notify that they will send mails within that day.

Then you can wait and check the mailbox to get the green card, before package thief stole it.

- After paying the green card fee $220, you can use the number to check when USCIS issued your green card via their website:

NOT all  DS 260 requests for a SSN results in a SSC being automatically generated.. take your passport with the stamped visa, your birth certificate and head back to the SS office and apply for a SSN
