Hi,

Here is the situation.

My original copy of my deed poll for my name change is long gone, from 2001/2. However, I strangely had a photocopy of it on my computer. So I sent the photocopy of it to the law firm it was administered in, to see if they can identify a matching document and produce a certified copy.

They produced a certified copy. The attorney that works at the law firm now signed it, with a chop. However...

The attorney who ORIGINALLY signed it in 2001/2 no longer works at the law firm. I thought under USCIS protocol the same attorney had to sign it, so I pestered him on email earlier this year if he could do it.

He said it is not legally lawful to do so, and refused to. I even tried to mail out my certified copy deed poll to his 'office address' I found on the internet, only to receive it back 1 month later from the post service saying that his address of his law firm does not exist.

I have email proof from this attorney refusing to sign it.  Should I print the emails out to show it as evidence?

Is this going to be an issue at my interview that the attorney that signed it in 2001/2 did not sign it, but much rather the new attorney heading the same law firm I obtained my deed poll from?

Thanks.

Hi,

Take what you have now, then write up another deed as per the .gov instructions as a back up - this does not need to be done by a solicitor. This could (for all in tents and purposes), be done on the back of a ** packet.

A solicitor doing it does not make it any more official than say, me meeting you for a coffee and signing it as a witness.

What you need to do now is just get a certificate of name change I believe, to support that this is actually how you are known. If the deed was never enrolled in the courts, then there wouldn't be any change in the registry of your name, and therefore no certificate. If there was a registry change made, then you could probably obtain a certificate or something to show this, and if this was never done, then I'd spend the £30 to do it now.

I would advise going here to make sure you have everything: https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll

I hope this helps.

Hi, I am grateful for your information but I live in Singapore. I guess the legal formalities in terms of lexicon are the same but it's a lot.. different here. Over here the deed poll serves as the certificate of name change (strangely) and this was done as I was a child, so on national databases/passport/identification card I am known as my current name (reflected on the deed poll). So I'm not so sure how to do this.

ah I'm so sorry. I didn't even think it would be called the same in another country. Apologies! It might be helpful if you fill out your VJ profile and then someone with that knowledge might be able to better help you :)
