British Nurse to USA

Hello,

I hope you can provide some answers to my question.  My sister has been working as a senior nurse in the UK for 20 years.  With unexpected events in the family, it is necessary for her to move to the USA.

She achieved her BSN from Manila Philippines, migrated to the UK as a nurse, currently a british  senior nurse for 20 years and a british citizen.  She specifically needed to be in Metro DC (Washington DC, Northern VA, Maryland).

What are the USA requirements to apply for a nursing job here in the USA.  My sister's plight is kind of difficult because she was educated in a non-english speaking country, BUT is a 20 year British nurse AND a British Citizen.  The fact that she is coming from the UK and has lived and worked there for 20 years mean that she has passed all the English Language Requirements.

Your advise can give us guidance on where to start.

Thanks.

I would worry about requirements for the job AFTER she figures out if she qualifies for a work visa.

Since I understand that's her only way to immigrate. I don't understand how is it "necessary" for her to move.

It's not on her to figure out what is necessary to do, potential US employer needs to be willing to sponsor her and cover visa expanses. If no one in that place will want to sponsor her then she can't come to the US and work there.

I'd suggest to use Google and search for visa to work in US.

Two options:

She finds a US employer who is willing to hire her, and sponsor her (and pay the fees) for a work visa.  It's not as simple as just getting hired---she needs to be hired by someone willing to foot the bill and sponsor her to come over and work.

You (since your profile says you are now a US citizen) sponsor her to become a permanent resident and receive a green card.

Both options take time of course, nothing immediate.

Actually...nurses get it easier than most in this regard. There are agencies that deal with bringing nurses to the US. It takes around a year, they guide you through the US exams you need to take, and match you with an employer. You get an employment-based immigrant visa/green card through this process. In return you normally  need to sign a two or three year contract with that employer, and that’s usually at rates slightly less than you’d get in the open market (being a moot point as you are currently unable to look for a job on the open market). There was someone on VJ not long ago that reported on this process. Do a search for something like “agency nurse green card”, or similar. Obviously research the agencies too, I haven’t heard of scam ones but they might be out there.

Usually not an issue for nurses...many regions have a severe shortage (a local hospital here has many EB-based nurses that came through an agency, and is looking for more).

Hello,

She has to pass the NCLEX (US Nursing Exam) first after that she can look for an employer in the US to process a working or immigrant (EB2 or EB3) visa for her. The NCLEX application is a long process since she has to pass through CGFNS to verify her credentials if it meets US standards.  There are recruitment agencies in the UK or even online to help her.

CGFNS is well aware that the Philippines teach their Nursing curriculum in English.

Different States have different rules regarding taking the NCLEX. Let her check the Board of Nursing website for each State that she wants to work in.

I'll just add that some state's BON will require a TOEFL (or similar) requirement for English proficiency despite the courses being taught in English. It's only really supposed to apply to those who were taught in non-English programs, but they have requested it from some nursing applicants.

I'm not sure how the UK citizenship will affect this...it shouldn't matter, but they may just see that and not question it too. ;)
