Which is considered the marriage date?

That is definitely wrong. I can say my vows to my husband every single day but that doesn't mean we get married again every day. Sounds like OP had a civil wedding with local authorities and then later had a party to celebrate. Emotionally that party was their "real" wedding in their minds but legally the first, civil wedding was.

It’s not definitely wrong. You could ask just about anyone on here when their wedding date was and I’ll bet you 99% will say the day they said their vows in front of their family with the wedding officiant presiding over the ceremony. The OP never said they had a civil wedding.  Perhaps in the country they were married, the laws are different. In the US, it is the day of your ceremony that determines your wedding date.

It is VERY common for international couples to have a legal ceremony to sign paperwork and then have one or more ceremonies later in each other's countries. Some same-country but different-religion couples also hold multiple ceremonies. My husband has also had a lot of anxiety over what date to tell the immigration officer for this very reason. It's unclear what the OP actually did but for immigration purposes I would count whatever day you signed a legal contract, which may or may not be the same day you said "I do" in front of your family.

IMO, your attorney is wrong. Your legal marriage date is the day you two actually said your wedding vows to each other.

I think it depends on the country.  In Taiwan, my wife and I signed our marriage contract on Jul 26th....in Taiwan, only the 2 spouses and 2 witnesses are required to make it legal...no need for anyone presiding over a ceremony. we simply signed it during lunch with my wife's SIL and Niece. ..We took it to be registered at her Household Registration Office on July 30th.  The staff there explained that the law dictates that the official marriage date is the day it was registered.  Anyway, our OFFICIAL marriage certificate obtained from that office shows our marriage date as July 30th.........  we choose to celebrate our anniversary on that day..:)

This a screen shot from the official "US Consulate" in Taipei.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Winner.  Winner.  Chicken dinner.

Don't presume that the OP's marriage date follows US laws when they got married abroad.  The rules in Vietnam are different from the US.  The legal date of the marriage in Vietnam is when it's registered with the local people's committee.

I obviously did not assume that.  I didn’t realize VJ was a competition. Learn something new everyday.

I personally know USC who got married months before wedding.

A marriage becomes a legal marriage on a certain date, whether ANY ceremony was involved.  How this works varies by country.  Since a "Certificate of Marriage" is a required document for filing a spouse petition, the "date of marriage" on that certificate IS the marriage date.  PERIOD.

In this context, it doesn't matter when the couple considers themselves married.

Sigh! What's going on here?

The USCIS-recognized marriage date is the date that you were legally married by a person authorized to conduct marriages!! The date shown on the marriage certificate. The date you say the chair of the city or president or whoever conducted the marriage and signed the certificate, THAT is the date you give USCIS! The license permit is simply booking an appointment to come in for a wedding/marriage to be conducted by a duly authorized person.

You can get the permit and never show up for the marriage ceremony. That does not make you married in USCIS's eyes. Date on the permit is not a marriage date. It is the date the PERMIT was issued. Permit does not equal certificate.
