I was reading some place i am out of status which  scares me.

I filed my i751 on July 17th 2017

I received my extension letter with it stating that you have a one year extension from the expiration date on my green card which is Oct 14 2017.

I was told i need the i551 stamp in my passport since i still have a pending case.

When should i get that stamp and why? And am i really out of status considering the pending case and my n400 pending?

My assumption is i am good until October is this right?

You're not out of status...you're still an LPR until an immigration judge determines otherwise. At worst, you would have no documentation of being an LPR still.

The extension letter extends the validity by 1 year. New ones are supposedly being sent out that extend it to 18 months.

You can make an infopass appointment to get an I-551 stamp as necessary. There's some disagreement among offices on how soon this should be...I'd try within 30 days of the expiration (assuming a new extension letter for 18 months doesn't come).

Your GC validity has been extended to October 2018 with the letter

You do not need a stamp unless you will be traveling outside of the US after your 1 year extension has elapsed

Inaccurate. You only need the stamp if you are planning to travel outside of the US during your pending petition.

Some offices have kept applicants' extension letters when they go to get the I-551 stamp in their passports.

Now I'm a tad confused. I've traveled outside the US with my passport + expired GC + extension letter and had no issues upon reentry. Airline employees were actually very familiar with the letter (Emirates).

I thought the stamp was necessary for international travel after the extension letter expires?
