Totally agree with Alabamak1. The rule is the same for K1 visa holders (Male and female). Read my first post. You do not have to request a new card because you won't change your last name.

You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN.

@linuxma @Tm and Je a clear NO on going on the 13th day of arrival. I suggest to get to SSA office as soon as you can. Like i said before.....getting SS# takes anywhere from 2 - 8 weeks. I have debunked that rule of the 14 day wait for manual verification when i was getting my wife her SS#. we got manual verification and others in the same month of POE did the same with different results. One swedish girl had SS# in 10 days from POE

My K-1 fiance applied for (and received) SSN the first week after arriving USA. She did not change her last name after marriage. If she decides to, she will get new Social Security card. The SSN is permanent - the number never changes. It's no big deal. Get your SSN now and change name if you want. Not very difficult to understand or do.

I think the beneficiary is a male. In this case you do not need to change your last name after getting married. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Unless he chooses to change his last name to his wife’s last name. That is what my husband did. :star:  I would go and get the ss card right away, before marriage, regardless of name change.  You don’t need to wait two weeks.

We applied for SSN and marriage license on the same day, 4 days after me entering the US. No need to wait, better to get it done and over with.

Nobody needs to change their name. It's optional and unless you specify you're changing, the authorities default to assuming you haven't. A man is just as eligible to change his name as a woman is, no matter if the marriage is same sex or not.

Changing your name is a major headache, so it's better not to change it.

No. This used to be true and it's not true anymore now that all i-94s are electronic. I went to the social security office a few days after POE and I got my SSC a week later.

Hi guys,

I would like your advice about the next step after the k1 visa is approved. Should I wait two weeks until applying for a SSN, before getting marriage licenses? And is it fine to spend the honey moon in another state and do I only need my passport for traveling inside the usa?

Get SS Number BEFORE getting marry, getting it after getting married is harder and difficult.  To travel within the USA you need an ID, in your case your passport. If you travel to Puerto Rico, there are randoms  check at the airport when traveling to the mainland asking about your citizenship and legal status in the USA.

Go get SS# now. It helps with other things like getting a drivers license, establishing credit and more.

If you wait I don’t think it’s a huge issue, but it’s nice for the above reasons.

My fiance applied for his SS# exactly one week after being here. We took his updated i-94 that showed his status here, his passport, the application already filled out, and the list of visa types allowed a # from the SSA site. No problems what so ever and told us it would be mailed to us within 7-10 days. He got it 7/23/18 exactly one week from applying.

You can do it now or wait until you're married whichever you prefer.

You do not need a passport to travel between states and Puerto Rico....but if that’s all you have I would definitely keep it on me, your going to need an ID of some form but state to state doesn’t require pass ports.

but without a green card he should carry the passport to show he is here legally to avoid the legal problems when caught without proof of legal residency/

right now our local news media announced all foreigners must have legal proof or deportaton started
