Should i apply for SSN Before getting marriage licenses

Hi guys,

 

I would like your advice about the next step after the k1 visa is approved. Should I wait two weeks until applying for a SSN, before getting marriage licenses? And is it fine to spend the honey moon in another state and do I only need my passport for traveling inside the usa?

This is the rule for K1 visa holders. I followed this guide and it worked for me. After getting married l went to the SSN office to update my new last name:

:: For K1 Visa Holders :: As a K-1 Visa Holder you are eligible to receive a SSN upon producing a valid I-94 (unexpired). Do not wait until you only have a few weeks left until your I-94 expires to file for a SSN. Many SSA  offices will not allow you to file for a SSN if your I-94 is about to expire (generally 14 days prior to the expiration on your I-94). On the other hand, you should also not file for a SSN too soon either. You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN. If you go too soon your record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet, and it will require manual verification from the USCIS.

And yes, you can travel inside the U.S. with your passport. Your passport will be your ID until you get your driver license or another US government document with photo.

You do not need a passport to travel between states and Puerto Rico....but if that’s all you have I would definitely keep it on me, your going to need an ID of some form but state to state doesn’t require pass ports.

if you fly...you will need a passport since k-1 dont have a us issued ID

do not wait for ss#.... it takes sometimes 2 - 8 weeks depending on how fast they process one for you. Manual verification seems to be the norm nowadays. We went through this not long ago and it took 4 weeks

awe i m just confused after getting married do i still able to apply for snn even i don't have to change my name

there is no confusion here. You get married is back to waiting for for EAD to be able to get your SS#. Your name has legally changed the moment you got married, because you took your husbands name. Short explanation. W/o social security you might not be able to be put on your husband insurance at work and w/o insurance....good luck paying for Urgent Care, doctors visit and more. Been there done that. Medical insurance in my work at least, they asked immediatly for SS# and we couldnt get insurance. Some people in VJ say otherwise.....That was their case. My work requires it.

i mean in my case only my wife who's her name will be changed  it's won't impact applying for ssn after we get married

In my case, l applied for my SSN after two weeks of arriving to the U.S. After getting married I went again with my marriage license and requested for a new SS card with my new last name. I received my new card one month later without any  problem.

it's not clear, if you are the beneficiary here...

 

Only the "beneficiary" has this problem, when and if  they change their last name

I think the beneficiary is a male. In this case you do not need to change your last name after getting married. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

my fiancée she is the Petitioner and i m beneficiary this why i m wondering if we get married first we still can apply for ssn before 2 weeks gone

yes i m the beneficiary and i m male this why i m asking for what we should go for first ssn or get married

sorry, now that you said it, it came clear. I am assuming that you "the Beneficiary" will not take her name, so you have all the time from POE until 2 weeks before your I-94 expires to get your SS#.  I recommend not to do this. Get your SS# first, then get married. You are going to have to wait anyways for them to issue you a SS#. The 2 weeks reference is: Your I-94 has to be valid for at least 2 weeks,  before it expires, you want to have applied for SS#

thanks for your help we are planning to apply for ssn then we will get married
