unable to bring liquor into the USA

I've never bought dutyfree alcohol, but when I have moved alcohol across continents I've shoved it in my checked back. I've never declared anything while traveling and even when my bag has a "we checked your bag" note they don't seem to care if I have it or not. There are rules about the proof of the liquor though as my fiance wanted me to bring Everclear since they don't have it but its 95% and I think the limit is 70%.

the lady at security in miami said we needed some kind of TSA approved bag...anyone know what this is?

Yes.. there would have been no issue if you had not been boarding a domestic flight. I am assuming it was going through security to get to your flight to NY. The same restrictions regarding liquids and gels apply to domestic as well. Next time, place the liquids into your checked baggage after you have cleared immigration and customs from your international flight,  before you recheck your bags for the domestic flight. It it the travellers responsibility to ensure they comply with all regulations, not the seller.

me and my wife were traveling from guayaquil, ecuador, via miami, to new york. we bought some bottles of liquor after security in guayquil, put them in our carry ons. upon entering in MIA, after customs, security made us throw them away. shouldnt the store where we bought the liquor have told us we cannot take that into the USA? we already got our money back, but still for the next time I would like to know.

Thank you

maybe he thought we were flying domestic within ecuador?

It is only permitted in your check luggage, or if you bought it within then airport after going through security. You had it in you carry-on and was checking into a domestic flight, that's the reason it was discarded.

If you read his post again you can see he did but it within the airport after going through security. He was not checking into a domestic flight.

He switched flights in Miami, making it a domestic flight.

A similar thing happened to me with suncream at Miami airport. Purchased in London and put in my carry-on. Got to Miami and had to go through TSA to get on next flight to Costa Rica and forgot about the suncream I had purchased. It was confiscated for being over 3 oz even though it was purchased after security in London and had not been land-side at all.
