Medical Exam?

M fiance was just diagnose with cholesteatoma.  Is this an automatic denial for the medical exam?  She has been having some ear issues lately and so she went to the doctor and that is what they said she has.  It seems she may have to have surgery to remove it.

no, i don't think so. they are more concerned about contagious diseases (ie TB), drug use, mental/psychological issues.

No that will not effect getting a visa.

 

Here is the list that will deny anyone from entering the USA.
 
Communicable diseases of public health significance include—
    
    •Tuberculosis
    •Syphilis
    •Chancroid
    •Gonorrhea
    •Granuloma Inguinale
    •Lymphogranuloma Venereum
    •Hansen's Disease (Leprosy)
     
 Note. HIV is no longer used to disqualify someone who is applying for a visa.

 

And the following two disease categories-- •Quarantinable diseases designated by any Presidential Executive Order. Current diseases include: cholera, diphtheria, infectious tuberculosis, plague, smallpox, yellow fever, viral hemorrhagic fevers, severe acute respiratory syndromes, and influenza caused by novel or re-emergent influenza (pandemic flu).

Wow thanks for the list.  I really appreciate that.  So she should be fine then.  Hopefully, she can have the surgery beforehand, but then we are worried about long she may have to wait to fly here.  Anyways, thanks so much.

No. However, surgery might be required and post-op care. Where are you? if she has to fly here, the issue might arise regarding air-pressure on the flight. Check with the doctor.

Yeah I am in SC so if she has the surgery soon maybe she will have enough recover time before flying here.  Which she would have to fly to Manilla too for the medical and interview too.  I really hope this doesn't delay us any longer being together, but it is what it is I guess.  Thanks.

No, that is not a cause for denial.

I'm  not familiar with the condition, but one should be ready to show that they can receive adequate care within the US and that her medical condition will not cause her to become a public charge (e.g. plans to enroll in a health insurance plan covering the condition, or sufficient funds to cover expenses).

You shouldn't have any issues with being denied for that condition but as @geowrian said above, might be helpful to have insurance coverage plans ready.  Also, you'll want be aware of your insurance coverage anyway because it's a condition that may require follow up surgery after she's moved here.

 

Regarding timelines, I don't think it should set you guys back too far. My brother had cholesteatoma and was on the more severe end as far as surgery went so his ear was packed for 3 weeks after surgery.  I think the typical packing is 1-3 weeks after so she would be able to fly after that but as recommended previously, it's a question to ask the surgeon. Another thing to consider is that it's common to have to have a follow up procedure as it can be a difficult one to rid of completely with one surgery- she may have to travel back for that or find an ENT stateside to do the surgery. Research into ENTs in both locations and decide how you'd like to proceed in case you'd like the same surgeon for both.  (My brother's follow up surgery was a year later because his did come back but the second surgery got it all and he can actually hear out of that ear!).

 

Best wishes to your fiancee because I know it's not the most fun thing to go through but she'll be fine in a few weeks and you'll be able to be together
