Can anyone tell me if you will be able to obtain true certified copy of naturalzaiton certificate at the ceremony in addition to original cert. I understand you can get true certified copy at USCIS Office with Infosec appointment by showing original cert.  I’m trying save a trip to uscis if all possible. You can use the true certified copy of naturalization for passport application instead of sending original cert. let me know if you have info. Thanks

hi

no, you are given your certificate at the end of the ceremony and for the passport you send the original certificate

they will return your certificate by mail

a certified copy is news to me. I sent the original for the passport and so has everyone else that has applied for a US passport for the first time

Thanks aleful. I found out about getting true certified copy at uscis website and called customer service for passport application and confirmed that you can use that certified copy in stead of original certificate.

This question comes up around here once in a while.  It seems you *can* use a certified copy of your Naturalization certificate for other purposes where an original may be requested *except* for when applying for a US passport.  There have been other members who've reported trying to use the certified true copy (obtained through an infopass) and the passport agent/post office clerk refusing to accept it.

Taken directly from the USCIS page about Naturalized true certified copies, first line at the top of the page:

You will need to submit your original certificate of naturalization or citizenship AND a photocopy when applying for your U.S. passport. USCIS does not prohibit photocopies of certificates when providing proof of U.S. citizenship to the Department of State.

Yeah, I worry about getting the ONLY true Original lost in the mail, or a dozen other mishaps.   When we got married, the Judge said "Now keep that save, it is the one and only original, and you can not get another one to replace it."

Believe me, almost every single person applying for a US passport around VJ has had that thought cross through their mind.

The chances of it actually happening are very very slim.  Not saying impossible, of course, but extremely tiny compared to the sheer amount of new passport applications they receive yearly.

Thanks for all the inputs. I may have been misinformed by passport customer service rep then :( . But it will be a great idea to have that certified copy :)

Definitely get it if you can get the appointment----I've been trying off and on the last couple of weeks to snag an infopass appointment for the same thing   I already have my passport, just want a certified copy of the certificate on hand in case I ever end up losing/damaging the original....the original's in a bank safety deposit box, so chances of that are still slim, but hey it's free so why not before they get the idea to start charging Lord knows what for it.
